Amber's Journey: From Care System to Social Work Practitioner at Elysium (Full Transcript)

Speaker 1: My name is Amber. I work at the Cops. I'm a social work practitioner and I've been in Elysium for two years. So I work with the service users and their families on a day-to-day basis, also their care coordinators, to look at their next step, whether that be discharge and where they'll be discharged to, whether that be the community or to a step-down unit such as supported housing. So what I believe has helped me in my current role is working in the mental health industry for eight years, also my personal life experience growing up in the care system and having social workers myself, the support from my management, the training that I've received as a healthcare worker and the training that I'm due to receive in the role I'm currently working in at the moment. One of the great things working for Elysium is seeing not only myself but other healthcare workers that I've worked with move into different roles, whether that be admin, OT, social work like myself or going on to university to do their nursing degree and seeing the support they get the whole way through that. So the skills you would need to do my current role is, first of all, to be compassionate, to be able to work well as a team, to be able to be understanding, to work off your own initiative, to trust your instincts. So not every day will be the same and unfortunately not every service user wants to engage with you and is not always warm towards you, so it's just trying to work with them and to build that therapeutic relationship with a service user. So the pathway I'm looking at for my career at the moment is looking at going to university to do a social work degree, which I think currently is about four years and Elysium as a company has sort of encouraged me to do so and said that they'll support me with that.
