The Beginning (2005)

The Café Upload

Late night in an a New York café, a reporter tried to send an interview recording to a transcriber. The attachment was over the email limit and bounced - twice. That headache exposed the real gap: there was no straightforward place to upload audio and get a reliable human transcript on deadline. A weekend build became a prototype; the prototype became GoTranscript; and at 3:14 a.m., the first online order pinged through. From day one, the rule was simple - accuracy first, deadlines always.

Before Smartphones

The Mailroom Years

Before smartphones, audio arrived every which way: mini-discs, handheld recorders, even cassettes. One parcel turned up in a biscuit tin with a note: “Please hurry - court on Monday.” Intake hubs in the USA and UK ran like clockwork. A whiteboard named “The Atlas” tracked every shipment; a handbell rang when a box of tapes cleared digitization. It was chaotic and charming - and it worked.

Operation Stopwatch

Two fully manual years that forged our craft

For the first two years, everything was manual: assigning files by phone and email, style guides taped to the wall, and a monster spreadsheet. Editors kept literal stopwatches for two-pass reviews. We grew from 10 to 250 people in a year, fueled by coffee and a mantra: context beats shortcuts. Those rituals shaped the standards clients still feel today.

Crafting Our Platform

Our in-house order system and the art of small details

In the pre-smartphone era, clients recorded on digital handheld devices - and many still used analog tapes. We helped convert those recordings into acceptable formats and accepted analog media through two hubs, in the USA and the UK, so anyone could get accurate transcripts regardless of how the audio was captured.

COVID surges and a 2024 pledge: people before models

Remote work turned demand into a tidal wave. Teams held virtual tea breaks between deadlines to stay sane. When AI hype spiked in 2024, we wrote it on the wall: 100% human. Tools may assist planning, but people hold the pen. That decision wasn’t nostalgic - it was practical. Clients needed nuance, confidentiality, and accountability at scale.

We started with a simple idea: when words matter, people should handle them. That belief still guides every order, every deadline, every detail.
