Speaker 1: hi guys and welcome to this week's video and so today i am here to tell you all about transcription i've been getting a lot of questions on what is transcription how can i get started and so today i decided to explain to you basically what is transcription and also give you a few websites show you a few websites where you can practice your skill before you apply to the real job and so if this is something that you're interested in something that you really want to venture into sit back relax and let's do this and so if you're new here karibu if you're returning subscriber thank you so much for coming back remember to subscribe share this video like it so that it can youtube can push it out to as many people as possible and so without further ado let's go straight into the video and so the first thing that is important for me to note is to define what transcription is and here i've just taken a few notes so that it's easy for me to go through and uh so that we can follow through quickly so a simple definition is that transcription is the process of taking an audio or video recording of a conversation or speech and converting it into text once again it is the process of taking an audio or video recording of a conversation or speech and converting it into text so simple as that definition is is just that you have to just listen to a video recording or an audio recording and be able to type out what it is that you hear all right so a software that you can use to help you do this is something called ex expresscribe so this will help you because it will take your transcription success to an even higher level and enables you to pump work out faster it is an audio player software that is made for transcribers it uses key keyboard shot hotkeys to make controlling the audio or video easier when you say keyboard hotkeys it means like to play you can be told press this button to play place this button and here i have given you also an example f4 is used to stop the audio f9 is to play f7 is to rewind and f8 is to fast forward so once you understand once you cram it's about cramming honestly to know what f4 does if 10 does f7 does and if it does once you know this you can quickly control the audio slash video without losing your typing flow so you only have to concentrate on the typing and not worry about taking the mouse and pausing taking the mouse and playing rewinding just play press s7 and you will have rewinded press f4 and you stop the video okay and such and such and so there's a free version and there's a paid version but as i said here the free version has more than enough features to get you started as an at-home transcriber so don't worry if you're starting out and you don't have the money to purchase anything the free version will work just as fine all right if you don't want to use the expresscribe software there's also something called a foot pedal it's also known as a wave pedal a foot pedal is a contraption that allows you to rewind pause or play audio video files with your foot so this way you can allow your hands to focus on typing okay so the same way with the keyboard hotkeys we use a foot pedal which is controlled by your foot you just press and then you pause you press you rewind and search and search so i hope up to there we are together something else that is also important when you're starting out is headphones you can also use earphones if you do not have the headphones and yeah as long as they have good quality you're good to go all right okay next is skills and experience requirements what it is what what do you need okay to be a good transcriber and i've said one is attentive listening not only do you need to be able to listen but you have to be able to listen carefully and attentively this is because sometimes uh you may get files that have very thick accents because not no don't be lied to that you'll always get clear files and files will have very very very thick accents and some will be even focus groups like there are a lot of people talking so you have to really be able to listen attentively for you to make out what is being said so having that skill will come in handy when you're doing the real job something else is a fast typing speed this will help you just speed up your work because if you are a slow typer you will take a lot of time to even type out a 10 minute audio or a 15 minutes audio and this job is really paid per minute of audio work so you need to be a fast typer to help you be able to maximize on your profits if you're a slow typer right now there's a website called typingtest.com just click just type on google typingtest.com and it will lead you to that website where you can easily be able to practice your your typing skills and i will show you even that this typing text i'll go through it so that you can understand how or you can see how that uh website looks like it's pretty simple so it's very easy to navigate something else is that you need to have good grammar spelling and punctuation skills all right these will help you because i can't usually work once client ready jobs they do not have they haven't hired another editor to go through your work so you need to be able to type your work and be able to edit so it is very very important okay so now let's move to the type of transcription we have majorly two types which is full verbatim and clean verbatim for the full verbatim you are told to type out everything that you hear they eat uh when a client talks and says um or yeah yeah all that you need to type it out those are called fillers and are very important in full verbatim transcription or verbatim transcriptions you have to type out everything that you hear so pay attention when your client gives you work ask them do you want clean verbatim or do you want full verbatim now clean verbatim is just the opposite of full verbatim because um as opposed to full verbatim where you include every as and okays and yes and all that with clean verbatim you have to remove all that making the transcript look as clean as possible so if a client repeats themselves stutters a lot all that you have to to remove so those the filler words as i mentioned when a client stutters you have to remove making the transcript look clean okay one last thing on this section is the type of transcription jobs and here you may find you may have general transcriptions which includes things such as interviews podcasts just just about any any audio most of them fall under the general transcription those are just examples YouTube videos all that of course medical transcription just as the word says their medical transcriptions might be asked to type out doctor's notes and such and such and then legal transcriptions this is mostly like court proceedings where you're also asked to follow a code proceeding and type out and mostly these two they have special instructions so you have to be really careful and so thank you so much and let's move on to the next section where I go through the websites where first of all the typing test.com website where I show you how to practice your skills and then I will move over and I show you two websites where you can practice your skills before you apply so when you google that on google that is typing test.com this is the page that you land on uh from here before you take this the test to determine how many words you can type per minute i would say first of all you need to train trains that you can be able to understand what touch typing is and how you can go about it you visited the typing test.com site and you have practiced your skills i would suggest that you google scribe.com and this is the page that you will learn this website i've shown you before where you can get jobs but today we're here to find work but track our transcription knowledge and so here scroll down up to where it's written careers and you're hiring and then click on the we are hiring button and um when you click it again this is the page that you will land on you scroll down and when you scroll down you click on apply the home base transcriber remote position click on
Speaker 2: apply and this is the page that you'll come to okay scroll down and you will get it says
Speaker 1: and start earning or practice files today as i said you're not looking for work you're going to click on the practice files so that they can take us to the uh to where we can be able to practice our our skills before we apply to the real job and so here there's a few instructions that you have to go through they say it says click on the blue play button to preview the audio quality accents etc and select the easiest one so this is the blue button they're talking about you have to you click here to preview the file itself is a six minute audio so just click here and preview if it's something that uh you might want to work on depending on the the quality is good or the accent is something that you can easily work with and then you're told press f10 and listen for five seconds press f10 again to pause and type what you hear so those are short keyboard shortcuts which will help you be able to type a bit faster than when you're using your mouse number three it says repeat the process for the rest of the file press f7 to go back and f12 to insert a blank for inaudible parts so here uh f7 as i said it's a button for rewinding and f12 it helps you because they have their own guidelines so according to their guidelines when there's something you don't hear you press f12 to insert a blank and then i believe someone on the higher ranks like an editor will be able to listen to it again and be able to fill it in so one thing also to note is that every websites have has their own guidelines which you have to go through to understand number four it says spell check will be started automatically on submit and has to be completed in order to finish also on submission your transcript will be compared with our version and the differences will be shown look at the major changes and evaluate the accuracy yourself okay so you will type your own and then they will give you their own version which is what they is it is required of you and then you can compare to see are you good and is it something that you can start immediately and then here they tell you please use a supported web browser let's latest version at google com or mozilla firefox and the last one is they say please note that these files are provided for practice and are not representative of the actual test file actual test files are much harder okay so put that in mind the actual test files are much harder these ones they're just telling you like here you can see the first file they said it's of a british accent and then medium difficulty okay it's good because then they've listed they've listed already how difficult is the file here you're told it's an american accent with a low difficulty meaning it is something that you can hear when they say low difficulty something you can hear like here it says british accent with high difficulty it means this is a file that is a bit tough for one to understand so take note of that so again just preview the files select which one but i would suggest since you are learning to do transcription it is good that you do all of them but uh you can just choose on any and uh be able to see how it will tell so this is the uh the dashboard where it will it will lead you to again close that and then here again you can type they say press f10 and the file will play and then you listen to what the it is being said and then turn again and it will pose and then you type out what you hear and then after you have done all the typing just click on submit and then they will give you the version that uh you were supposed to have typed okay so it is that simple i would suggest again go through all these files and get to practice so that you can when it comes to the real job it will be easier for you okay so let's move on to the next website another site where you can practice your transcription skill it's called boxstab.com so when you're under google just go and type boxstab.com and it will lead you to this page and in case you missed a word here there don't worry i'll leave all these links in my description box and so you can go there and just click on the links so under services under the transcription services just click learn more and it will take us to a page where we can be able to practice or see a samples what is available on the available files we can use for our practice and so here you'll find title written types of transcription services and samples where they've given you practically every type of audio you can find there's legal there's business there's market research interview academic just go through and see there's also someone there's a podcast there's medical transcription so basically they've given you i would say everything and so you can also preview the file and get to here so what i suggest you do is click on these three dots and download the video as i showed you there's a software you can use to transcribe this which is the express crime or if you have a foot pedal and so you download the video and you go there and type it after that you can come and download the different kind of transcript so that you can compare against this is a verbatim transcript full verbatim rubber team slash reverberating because they also have a clean transcript that doesn't have the filler words and the stutters and all that this transcript with speaker identification their clients will ask for that this transcript with copy editing this transcript with speaker identification and time stamping okay and this transcript would proofreading so all these contain all that all these all these audios contains a transcript that you can compare yours against so if you choose to do a full verb transcription you can come here and click on the verbatim and compare how there is and how yours is if you've done a clean transcript again come and click on this and just compare to see how the two compare against each other so this is a good way for you to practice before you can click on the apply button so that you have a better chance of getting in because i'm assuming most of the people are new to this field and that's just starting out and so i hope all that i've shown you today has been of help and that you'll come back more because i i have i released a video every week of transcription jobs where you can apply for them and other also online opportunities and so if this is content that you're interested in please be sure to subscribe like and share this video so that it can reach as many people as possible but if you're here up to this point again i say thank you and i'll see you on the next one bye
