+1 (831) 222-8398[00:00:00] Speaker 1: This Ukrainian athlete refused to take off his helmet and was banned from competing here at the Olympics. Vladislav Hereskevich sent us the letter he received this morning informing him he'd been disqualified just before the start of the Olympic skeleton because of his determination to wear what he and his team have dubbed the helmet of remembrance in memory of 24 athletes killed of the more than 500 athletes killed since the start of the war in Ukraine. Having been asked not to wear it he said he couldn't and wouldn't betray those fellow athletes who had given their lives to enable him to be here this week.
[00:00:47] Speaker 2: Some things are more important than sports because of this sacrifice I'm able today to be here.
[00:00:53] Speaker 1: The International Olympic Committee says it breaches article 50 of the Olympic Charter which prevents demonstrations of political religious or racial propaganda within Olympic sites. President Kirsty Coventry traveled to Cortina to have what we understand was an emotional face-to-face meeting with Hereskevich.
[00:01:15] Speaker 3: No one no one especially me is disagreeing with the messaging. The messaging is a powerful message it's a message of remembrance it's a message of memory it's not about the messaging right it's literally about the rules and the regulations and that in this case the field of play we have to be able to keep a safe environment for everyone.
