Speaker 1: Hello, everyone. So, my name is Rufna Mesul, along with my teammate, which is Poovaneshwari and also Nulisa. So, today we would like to present about Second Language Acquisitions Project. It is about the interview, which we have with one of the adult learner and also a child learner. So, to get to know more about this, I would like to pass to Poovaneshwari
Speaker 2: to explain the introduction. So, for the introduction, language acquisition refers to the process through which humans learn to recognize and interpret language, as well as to produce sounds that form words, words that form sentences, and phrases that include difficult concepts. Language acquisition, for the first time, this is the process of learning the mother tongue. Language has been described as comprising symbols that convey meaning that also rules from combining those symbols. Acquisition occurs during childhood and results in unconscious knowledge of one's native language that is practically permanent. So, by definition, monolingual means the ability to speak only one language, bilingual, two languages, and multilingual, several languages. So, this findings for child learner is Nulisa's part, so I will pass to Nulisa.
Speaker 3: Madam, I'm going to present on the child learner. I have chose a five-year-old child learner and have interviewed her mother. Her name is Danisha. She is six years old. She is studying at Real Kids URG12 and she is in pre-3 English medium class. According to her mother, she feels that by feeding the knowledge of English language to the child will bring all kind of benefit to her as it is very easy to communicate with all races and the child can fit in easily anywhere and it's a stable quality during her working days. She has put all kind of efforts such as sending her to extra English languages class in order to improve her English skills. Based on my observation, madam, that the child is a monolingual person. It means that it describes someone who can speak or understand only one language. It can also mean written in, spoken in or involving only one language. Even though the child's mother tongue is Tamil, but since she is just six years old, for now she is a monolingual person because she only understands and acknowledges the English language. As the mother told that even though when they speak Tamil to her and try to make her speak it, she doesn't acknowledge it. So that's on the observation I have on her. And the questions I asked the mother regarding the child is, I asked for the biodata, the mother tongue of the learner, commonly used language, hours spent using the language in a day, purpose of the language being taught, what has been done to improve the language, what is the main source of learning the language, what is the common watch TV channel by the child, what is the progress of learning yearly? And based on all her answers, and I feel that that the child is currently a monolingual person.
Speaker 2: So, finding for the adult learner. From the interview, I learned that this adult learner knows more than two languages, which is the main language, Telugu, Tamil, Malay and English. We prefer multilingual as I know which nine out of 10 people will choose this. The reason is multilingual is people who know several languages, which will be a huge advantage for them like winning a lottery. Multilingual will be so special as adult learner will have good future as now, we can see job requirements need employee who knows more languages than their mother tongue. So, learning is a conscious process of trying to learn the second language. The term acquisition relates to the method that is carried out without conscious thought. In addition to the mother tongue, second language refers to the unintentional or accident acquisition
Speaker 4: of foreign language. So, I will pass to my another group member.
Speaker 1: Okay, so for the synopsis of the findings. Well, from the interview above, we have determined that there are a few things, which is speed of acquisition in the adult and child learner process and also the phonology sounds, grammar and pragmatics, the effects on the brain. So, for that I'm going to explain, which is the finding is actually based above on the children are often perceived to be the heavy hitters when it becomes a second language acquisition. So, many people think that if you want to learn a second language really well, linguistic usually of developing the native like language. It's true that the children learners are in general more likely to reach native like proficiency and adults learners. So, somehow there are a lot of differences between the child and the adult learners besides just age. For example, like many children are immersed in an environment where they hear and speak the second language all the time. So, mostly for the children, they learn by listening to what happens in the environment. So, that is why we always try when we will talk everything in front of the child. So, every time we speak, we used to think twice. Okay, what are the things that we're going to talk in front of our children? Because the child's age is like they could caught up by everything that we are talking each other very easily in that age. So, that is the thing we have find out in our interview also. So, for the next, the speed acquisitions. In the interview above, we have determined the speed acquisition of the child learner is much better than the adult learner. We often think also of the children like linguistic sponges absorbing everything that they hear. However, the interview has shown that adult learners and child learners more quickly during the beginning stages of recognizations, even if younger children often achieve higher proficiency in the long run. So, the adult learner that we have interviewed altered that she is aiming to study overseas, which is to be a multilingual is really great as she can survive that. So, why the adult learners wanted to improve their language is because maybe they are going to interview, they have to spoke very well as well. So, also when they wanted to go to overseas, they should learn the second language acquisition very well because then only they can communicate with the people in the overseas. So, for the next grammar, in this interview, we found out that grammar refers to the sets of rules that tell us how to put the words together in a sentence. So, many studies have found an advantage for kids in this domain. So, just like phonology, people who start learning a second language before puberty are more likely to achieve native grammatical proficiency as how the child learner's mother uses the word question theory in their daily lifestyle while communicating with the kid. So, next is the pragmatics. Yes, it's about the use of language in social interaction. Pragmatic competence refers to the ability to use language to convey meanings in conversation. So, to interpret another speaker's intentions. So, one crucial factor of pragmatic competence is theory of mind, which is the ability to understand that desires, emotions, and beliefs can impact behavior and another person's beliefs may not be the same as one's own. So, this ability doesn't fully develop until late childhood, which means that when children learn a second language, they have to grapple with new pragmatics, their native language. Yet, adults, on the other hand, they can really rely on their experiences in their native language and they learn which aspects of pragmatics they need to pay most attention to in their new languages. So, when we see or the theories that. Next slide, please. Okay. So, the previous one. Sorry. Another one. Okay. Next one. Sorry. Okay. So, well, from the interviewable, we find out. Okay. From the interviewable, we find that selection is, is this the slide? Not this one. Next. Next. Okay. The other one. This one. Okay. Yes. So, the interview has shown that the adult learners and child learners more quickly learn during the beginning stages acquisition. So, even if younger children often achieve higher proficiency in the long run, the adult learner that we have interviewed that she's aiming to study overseas, which is to be multilingual, is really great as she can survive there. Plus, we have to communicate with people in order to achieve something. Here, it is where the adult learned to use the theory of acquisition learning, considering that young children often learn via immersion, where they have much more input than adult learners who learn in classrooms. Adults definitely are faster. So, another theory is. Okay. People who start learning a second language before puberty are more likely to achieve native grammatical proficiency. As how? As the child learner's mother uses the question theory that the study for formal grammar is essential for second language acquisition and the teacher is skillful enough to present explanation in the target language so that students understand. For example, the child learner's mother has put in all kinds of efforts, such as sending her child to English, to extra English language classes in order for her to improve her English skills. So, that's all from me. And for the conclusion, we'll pass to Lisa.
