Speaker 1: In this program, we look at the legal architecture that underpins the global economy. What do I mean by that? Now we have a globalized economy, production and consumption takes place everywhere. At the same time, we have 200 countries making decisions, coming up with laws, regulations. How do these things interact? What kinds of agreements do countries enter into in order to manage their economic relations? So this is the focus of this program. In the first semester, students really get exposed to the fundamentals of the international economic system and how international rules regulate the system. In the second semester, students get deep into investment arbitration and learn to operate within the context of a tribunal, or they get into international trade law and discuss the various free trade agreements that now make new rules for international trade relations.

Speaker 2: I chose the program Trade Investment Law because I was interested in law, but also politics and economics, and I believe that this course is really the crossroad between those three elements. I grew up in a very international environment and I wanted to bring this in my future career. I really enjoy the challenges that the study presents and also the opportunities with regards to moot courts and law clinics that are available to students.

Speaker 1: Many of our students end up in ministries and economic bodies within their governments. Others go to work for international economic organizations, such as the WTO, but also organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Many students also end up working in the private sector. So when you want to stay in Amsterdam, for example, and then there are all kinds of startups and there are banks and there are international law firms here where really students can work and then they can start careers.

Speaker 2: The Trade Investment Law is quite a diverse course. We have many students from all around the globe. I believe 80% of the student population is international, which makes for interesting conversations and interesting friends.

Speaker 1: We have sometimes the idea that this is just to train hardcore corporate lawyers. While we do have some students that go that way and go work for banks and corporations, a lot of students are far more interested in the aspects of international economic relations and how they affect other aspects of our lives. So for example, the interaction between trade rules and the environment, or the interaction between environmental regulation and human rights.

Speaker 2: So my future advice for students wishing to come to Uwe would be to make full use of the opportunities that Uwe presents. Go apply to the Moot Court, apply to the law clinics and make the most of your time here.
