Speaker 1: Hello, everybody. Welcome back to my channel, Jennifer Marie Veo, where I teach you different ways that you can make money online working from home. So a large majority of my subscribers are people who have found my channel because they want to learn how to become a transcriptionist and how to get paid for typing what they hear or for transcribing different audio files. So in this tutorial, I'm going to teach you how to use the free version of a software that you can download for your computer called Express Scribe. Now this is an excellent tool if you want to transcribe different clients files, or if you're working on multiple files at once. It's quite similar to another transcription software I reviewed and did a tutorial on called oTranscribe. But the difference is that this one you can download for your computer. So you can work on these files even when you're not connected to the internet. And this is great for people who live in countries where maybe the internet connection isn't always strong. Or perhaps you do a lot of your transcribing going to different internet cafes or at the library. Or if you don't have the internet at home, but you still want to do transcription work, you can work on these files and transcribe these files on your computer without having to be connected to the internet. So I'm going to show you how to use this software, you'll learn how to use the free version of Express Scribe to transcribe files without having to switch from your audio player and text editor. So this is great for transcribing files for clients, transcribing your YouTube videos, and you can work on multiple files at once. And then I'll teach you how to edit and proofread your transcript to ensure it is free from punctuation and grammatical errors using the free version of Grammarly. And here are some other relevant tutorials you may want to watch that will help you with this as well. I have a tutorial on how to download audio files from any website. So let's say you are working for some transcription platform and you want to use Express Scribe to help you while you're transcribing those files. If you follow this tutorial, you can download any audio file from any website whatsoever. And that will help you as well. And another tutorial I have that is very useful is how to remove background noise and improve audio quality. So if you have to transcribe a file and it has really poor audio quality, before you put it in Express Scribe, and before you load the file, you can remove the static and remove the background noise and even increase the volume. So it's a cleaner and easier file to listen to. Okay, so let's get started. So Express Scribe has a pro version and also a free version. So we are going to make sure we install the free version. I'm going to put the link to the free version in the description below this video. So it says click on this link to install the free version of Express Scribe. So we're going to click on that here. And then it will have this EE setup file that will download or that will install. Click Yes, accept the license terms. So once you install it, it's going to start playing this demo file. Here you can see it says thank you for using Express Scribe. And this must be from before when I downloaded the pro version to try it out. If this pops up for you, click on try the free lite version, okay, because that is what we want to do. So you can see here, Express Scribe transcription software, unlicensed, non commercial home use only. So you should be able to use this unlimited, the free version, if we go to help, then about Express Scribe, it says unlicensed version, non commercial home use only. So we should be able to use this without any restrictions, as this is the free unlicensed version for non commercial home use only. So here you have the demo file. But let's say we want to add our own file, I'm going to click on this icon right here to maximize it. And I'm also going to close off this live chat, you can try this file as a test, if you want, you click on it, and you can press play. There's also different hot keys, you can see here, you press F9 to play it or just

Speaker 2: press the play button. There is much more to Express Scribe, which is also covered, you can stop it, which is also covered in the Express. Go back or forward, or print the full

Speaker 1: Express. But let's say we want to work on multiple files at once. And let's say this was one of my files, I'm going to add another file here, you can drag and drop it here or right click, select load dictation files and locate the file that you want to transcribe. Okay, so let's say I found the file I want to transcribe, I'm going to click on it and then press load. And you can see here it says Express Scribe transcription software, you have a new dictation, you can either go to it or just close it off. I'm going to click no thanks here. And now all we have to do is click to press play.

Speaker 3: Hello, everyone, and welcome to Sparkle English. Today's mini

Speaker 1: list. And here you can see the date that you imported the file the length of the file. And what you can do over here is change the volume as well. So you can lower the volume if that's too loud for you as you're transcribing to Sparkle English. And let's say you want to really slow down the file because it was you know, I'm talking way too fast or the person's talking way too fast, you can adjust the playback speed, let's say to 70. For example, today's mini lesson is

Speaker 3: on the difference between no and no. And what you'll do is as

Speaker 1: you're listening to this file and pressing the hotkeys, you can start typing as you're listening to it. So let's go back to the beginning.

Speaker 3: Hello, everyone, and welcome to Sparkle English. Today's mini lesson is on the difference between no and no.

Speaker 1: Okay, and then you can just go back with these hotkeys right here by clicking on them or just pressing F7 on your keyboard or F8. If you want to change these hotkeys, so they are something that you're used to using perhaps with other transcription platforms, you can go to options, playback, and then hot keys. And here you can click on them and adjust the hotkeys if click on them and adjust the hotkeys. If you want, you can click, for example, if I wanted to adjust the play button, I could click on this, and then press change, and then press whatever key I want to change it to. And this is helpful if say you're you work with Rev or transcribe me and you're you're used to certain hotkeys, and you want them all to be the same. Now let's say you want to add a timestamp, I'm going to go back to the beginning of this file, and then go to notes, insert time, and then press a space. And now you can see here there's a timestamp in there. And of course, it would be up to you and your client of how you want to use these timestamps. Let's say they wanted you to put in a timestamp every time a speaker changed. Otherwise, you might want to use this software and not use timestamps at all. It just depends on if you're doing this for a client that you found on Fiverr or Upwork or People Per Hour, or if you're doing this, using this software for your own purposes for your YouTube videos, or if you're using this to transcribe files from a transcription platform. So what is great about this software is that you don't have to switch between a audio editor and a text editor, like listening to a file on Windows Media Player and trying to transcribe the file in Microsoft Word, you can do it all in the same dashboard right here. And I really love this speed feature, especially if you're listening to a file and sometimes maybe one speaker is speaking really fast and another one is really slow. It's just that easy to increase the speed or decrease the speed so that your typing speed is going to match the speed of the person talking and that you can type as you're listening to them without having to stop and replay the file continuously. Now I want to show you another little trick. So let's say I'm going to add another file. And as you can see here, if I click on the file, I get my transcription file here. But let's say I'm working on another one or want to work on another one at the same time, you can click here, speech to text. And it says Express Scribe can use a speech to text engine to automatically create a draft transcript when you receive a dictation. Now this doesn't work perfectly, that's for sure. It might be more trouble than it's worth if a file has does not have a clear voice. But for fun, let's try it out. We're going to click enable speech recognition, then press OK. Now again, right click, load dictation file and find the file you want to load. Okay, so after you give it a few seconds, maybe a minute, depending on the length of the file, you can see it has done a speech to text transcript, but you can definitely see that it's not perfect at all. So if I'm going through here, I'm going to press play. So you can see Hello,

Speaker 4: everybody, welcome to my channel Sparkle English, where I teach you ways to improve your level of English. You can see here,

Speaker 1: you know, Hello, everybody, welcome to my channel, they messed this part up. There's a lot of it is is accurate, but a lot of it is not accurate. So it just depends. I speak quite clearly. And I think that file was a very clear file. So the fact that it didn't transcribe it perfectly, this shows me that this isn't an excellent if it's not an excellent feature. But let's say your typing speed is really low, or you really want some help. Maybe this will help you out because you know, it has transcribed a lot of it correctly. But a lot of it it has transcribed incorrectly as well. So for me personally, I would not want to use this feature, because there's just so much correcting that you have to do. So if you want to turn this feature off, again, we'll go to speech to text and then just unclick enable speech recognition, press OK. So it just depends. And then we could start this file over by highlighting it all or pressing Ctrl plus A, and then backspace and then we could start fresh. Okay, so once you're finished transcribing your file, and again, you can see you can just flip through these as you want, as you're working on these. And let's say I'm finished this one here, and I want to export it, there's a few things I can do, I can press Ctrl plus A on my keyboard to highlight it, and then right click Copy. And then I could go into Microsoft Word, or Notepad or whatever it is I'm using, right click Paste. Okay, and then I have my transcription here. Another thing you can do is go Notes, Copy, or Notes Copy to Clipboard. You could also go File, Export Notes, and then Export All Files as well. And then when you are done a file, you can just click on the file and click Done and it will remove it from your list. To save a file, just click on the Save icon, Save as DCT, and you can give it a name, Save. And then it will save the file. And so if we close off Express Scribe and open it up again, you'll see the file it has been saved, and it's still ready for us to use and to work. You could also use Express Scribe with a foot pedal if you have one of those. You just go to Options, then Controller. And you can go ahead and click on Controller Setup Wizard to enable the foot pedal controller. But really, this is an excellent software that you can use that you can have on your computer and use it especially when you're not connected to the internet, and you aren't able to use a software like OTranscribe. The last thing I want to show you is something that I've been promoting for quite a while now. I love Grammarly. I think it's an excellent tool that you can use. Even the free version is excellent. Again, we're going to Ctrl A to highlight our transcript, then Ctrl C to copy or right click Copy, we're going to bring it into Grammarly. And then we're going to press Ctrl plus V to paste it. And then we can go through here and it will help us make any corrections that we need. And again, I have the free version, you can see here, they want me to put a hyphen, let's put a hyphen there. Now letting me know I don't need a comma here. So again, if you go to the link in the description below, you can download Grammarly and get Grammarly for free. And it does an excellent job of helping you out if you put incorrect commas or you spell something incorrectly. And that way you have a nice polished transcript ready to submit either to your transcription platform or to your client or to whoever you are transcribing for. If you want to save this once you've put it into Grammarly, just Ctrl A, then right click Copy or Ctrl C to copy. And then again, you can put it in Ctrl V into your text editor or Microsoft Word and save it as a file and you're ready to send it off to whoever your client is or to whatever you have transcribed the file for. So again, I definitely recommend downloading Express Scribe. It's an excellent software. It's a little old school looking but for a free software for non commercial home use, it is excellent. I don't think the speech to text option is very good. So I don't recommend using it. Because again, my voice is very clear and it didn't transcribe my voice correctly. So I think using this to sort and organize all your transcription files and to work on them within the editor right here using the hotkeys is a great way to help you transcribe faster. Definitely make use of the volume and the speed feature here. Because if you really bring down the speed to 70% and you're typing as you're listening to it, it's much easier than trying to listen to the file at 100% speed and stopping and going back constantly. It's better to have a slower file so you can type more casually without having to stop and go back and forth. So that's it for this tutorial on how to use Express Scribe. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
