Speaker 1: Europe is a continent characterized by its cultural and linguistic diversity. Multilingualism is one of the cornerstones of the European Union. This means that our citizens can go to the European Union in any of the 24 official languages. But you will tell me, this is very good in theory, but how does it work in practice? In this video we want to give you a practical example of how we facilitate multilingualism. I am sure that you have seen our interpreters in the images of the news about the European summits, where our leaders of the European Union meet to discuss the hottest topics of European news. In this video we are going to give you an example of one of the meetings that we normally cover with interpretation. It is a meeting where we have representatives of our Member States. In this meeting we have been asked to interpret German, English, Spanish, Irish, Romanian, Polish and Lithuanian.

Speaker 2: Hello, I am a representative of Romania at this meeting. I am glad to be here, I am glad that we have interpreters today, and that I have the opportunity to speak the mother tongue and to listen to the interpreters in my mother tongue. Thank you for giving me the floor, Mr. President, dear colleagues, dear representatives of the European Commission.

Speaker 3: It is an honor for me to represent Romania today. I work from different languages to Spanish, and one of the languages spoken at today's meeting is Romanian. My colleague Kevin, in the English booth, also has Romanian. And what we do when translating to our Romanian languages, is to make our colleagues in the other booths have a relay language, as we call it in the Gerga, from which they can interpret to their own languages.

Speaker 4: For today's meeting, neither I nor my colleagues who are sitting here have Romanian. And since the speaker will speak Romanian, I will have my Spanish colleague Paco translate Romanian into Spanish and then translate it back into German. Thank you very much, Mrs. President.

Speaker 6: ...for organizing this culture sector. At today's conference, as part of the interpretation team in the Polish booth, we have no one who would know Romanian. And since the speaker is Romanian and speaks Romanian, we will use the relay system. So the colleague in the English booth will translate from Romanian into English and then we will translate from his English into Polish for our Polish listeners.

Speaker 7: I work in the Gerga booth, but there is no Romanian in this room today, or Spanish, but in it. So I have to listen to the relay. Kevin is in the English booth doing translation from Romanian to English. So I have to listen to the relay and then I will translate from Romanian to English.

This makes the work much easier. With the help of translation services, representatives of different member states can have a full and complete discussion in their own mother tongue, which makes it possible to understand the technical details in such a way that the discussion remains coherent and the coherent outcome is achieved.
