How to Find Closed Captioning on PBS Videos

Today we'll show you how to find and enable closed captions on the PBS site and app. Most videos streaming with PBS will offer a closed caption option, similar to this icon. We'll first cover enabling closed captions on the PBS website. Then, we'll cover popular streaming devices, smart TVs, and smartphones. We'll only cover streaming videos online. For accessing closed captions on broadcasted shows, please refer to your TV's settings or manual. On pbs.org, first find a video you would like to watch and open it. On the video player, hover over the CC icon with your mouse to bring up the caption options. To turn captions on, select English. To turn captions off, select Off. To change the size, font, and color of the captions, select Customize. Let's enable captions for this video by clicking English. You should now see closed captions appear on the video, and they'll be enabled for all other videos on pbs.org. On Roku, start playing a video, and then press the star button on your Roku remote. This will bring up the closed caption menu. Highlight the Captions Mode option and press the OK button on your remote to turn captions on. To return to the video, press the back button on your Roku remote. You should now see closed captions appearing on the video. On Apple TV, use your remote to bring up the video controls and select this closed caption icon. Use your remote again to select English to turn captions on. You should now see closed captions appear on the video you're playing. On Amazon Fire, use your remote to bring up the video controls and select this closed caption icon. Use your remote again to select English to turn captions on. You should now see closed captions appear on the video you're playing. On Vizio TV, your remote will have a special button to turn closed captioning on and off. Press this button on your remote and check your TV screen to see the closed caption status. On Comcast TV, use your remote to move up to the closed caption option at the top right of the video. Use your remote again to select this option and turn captions on or off. On Samsung Smart TVs, you must turn on closed captions before opening the PBS app. While on your Samsung TV's home screen, use your remote to bring up your TV's settings. You can also look for the settings option on your home screen. Within the TV's settings, look for the closed caption option, typically found in the General or Accessibility menus. Select this option to turn captions on, and then open the PBS app. If you have trouble finding the closed captions option in your TV's settings, please refer to your TV's manual or Samsung's support website. If you're using the PBS app on a mobile device like an iPhone, iPad, or an Android phone or tablet, you can enable closed captions from the video player options. While playing a video on the app, tap or pause the video to bring up the player controls. If you're playing a video in portrait or vertical mode, you'll first need to tap this icon to bring up additional options. On the player controls, you'll see this icon indicating closed captions. Depending on your device, this icon may have a different appearance. Tap this icon to bring up the caption options. To turn captions on, select English and return to the video.
