Speaker 1: Hey, this is Jason Johnson, Instructional Designer here at University of Kentucky, College of Social Work. And I just wanted to do a quick little tutorial here just to talk about how to do attendance in Canvas. Now I know many of you have either hybrid classes or you're basically just using Canvas as a shell for your assignments and maybe your grades and attendance. And so I wanted to show how that works because it's not always straightforward. Here's the part that's just a little tricky. So I've got my test Canvas shell up here, and if you look at the assignment group, you don't see an attendance. Now what happens in Canvas is that it will make an attendance assignment for you as soon as you do the first action in attendance. So attendance tab should be on the left there. If it's not there on the left, you can go under Settings, Navigation. Sometimes it might be at the bottom. It might look something like this, and you just need to click and drag it up to the top. Students will not see the Attendance tab, and then when you click on the Attendance tab, you will immediately go to the current day and one of the different sections that you have. Now for testing purposes, I have a few different sections, so I'm just going to click on All right now. So here we have the different students in the class. Right now, there's still no assignment, no way to grade attendance, and so even though I've pulled this up in Roll Call, if I go back over here to Assignments again just to show you, you will see that there is no attendance assignment. Now if I go back over here to Attendance, what will happen in Canvas is that as soon as I use Attendance, it will create for me an attendance assignment. So in order to use the Attendance, all you need to do, you can either click to toggle either Present, Not Present, or Late, and that's the easiest way to do it. You can also, of course, Mark All Present or Unmark All if you need to do that. So if we choose to make a few of these present, and then we maybe make one Not Present and a couple of them late, this is what happens. Saves it automatically. And now when I go back into my Assignment tab, you will see automatically there's now created a Roll Call Attendance. From here, we can click on this, and it acts just like another assignment, except you'll see in the setup that you'll be able to go into the Roll Call Attendance, and if I hit Edit, you will see a few options here, and it essentially is an assignment that uses an external tool of the Roll Call. From here, you can change the points, of course, if you wanted to do fewer points. Not everything's set up in that way. And you can also assign to different sections of the grade, depending on what kind of attendance policies you have on your different sections, if you wish. So now, as well as in the Assignments, I will see Attendance showing up automatically in my Grade tab, and if I scroll over, I will see the Roll Call. Now, because I changed my points after I did my first attendance, you can see all the students have these huge marks. So what we need to do now, and because I did it in that way, we need to go back over to Attendance again. And we'll go into All, unmark them, and we'll mark them all as present. Go back to Grades again. You'll see now it's reflected. Everybody is 100%, which is what you would expect to see for all of those. From here, as well, just like any other grade, we can message students who get below a certain percentage and ask them where they've been. We can go to the Assignment Details from here, and so on. Hopefully that was helpful. If you have any questions about how to start up Attendance in Canvas, I know it's not exactly straightforward in the way that it works. So hopefully that helps just by walking through how the Attendance is set up. By starting the Attendance, Canvas creates that assignment for you. Then you'll need to go back and edit that assignment to work into your syllabus and into your grading. Message me or comment below if you have any questions.
