Speaker 1: Welcome to Math with Mr. J. In this video I'm going to cover how to identify or how to find the coordinates of a point on a coordinate plane. Now just as a quick review, remember the x-axis is the horizontal axis so it goes side to side. This is the x-axis right here and then the y-axis is the vertical axis so it goes up and down. This is the y-axis right here. Now remember the x-coordinate always comes first and the y-coordinate always comes second. Let's jump into our examples starting with number one where we have point A. So we need to find the coordinates of point A. What's the x-coordinate and what's the y-coordinate? So when working with coordinates we always work horizontally first. So we need to take a look at the x-axis and where point A is along the x-axis. So if we take a look at point A, point A is right here along the x-axis and that's negative 8. So that's going to be the x-coordinate. Now we need to find the y-coordinate. So how far up is A? Well this is 5 on the y-axis so it's over to negative 8 and then up 5. So 5 is the y-coordinate. So the coordinates or ordered pair for point A, negative 8 is the x-coordinate and then 5 is the y-coordinate. So we have x and then y. Let's move on to number two where we have point B. So let's determine the x-coordinate first. So where along the x-axis is B? Well right here which is 9. So the x-coordinate is 9. Now we need to figure out the y-coordinate. So how far down from 9 is B? Well this is negative 10 on the y-axis. So we go over 9 and then down to negative 10. So negative 10 is the y-coordinate. So the coordinates or ordered pair 9, negative 10. Let's move on to number 3 where we have point C and we're going to start with the x-coordinate. So where along the x-axis is point C? Well right here which is negative 4. So that's the x-coordinate. As far as the y-coordinate, point C is right here along the y-axis and that is 8. So the y-coordinate is 8. So we go over to negative 4 which is the x-coordinate and then up 8. So 8 is the y-coordinate. So for point C we have negative 4, 8. Let's move on to number 4 where we have point D. So we will start with the x-coordinate. Point D is right here which is at 3 on the x-axis. So the x-coordinate is going to be 3. Now as far as the y-coordinate, we are at 0 on the y-axis. We did not move up or down vertically. So our y-coordinate is 0. So for D the x-coordinate is 3 and the y- coordinate is 0. Let's move on to number 5 where we have point E and we will start with the x-coordinate. E is right here along the x-axis. So the x-coordinate is 7. And then as far as the y-coordinate, E is right here along the y-axis. So we go over 7 and then up 9 for point E. So those are the coordinates. The x-coordinate is 7 and then the y-coordinate is 9. Lastly let's move on to number 6 where we have point F. As far as the x-coordinate, F is right here along the x-axis which is negative 2. So the x-coordinate is negative 2. As far as the y-coordinate, F is right here along the y-axis. That's negative 2 as well. So the y-coordinate is also negative 2. So for the coordinates for point F or the ordered pair, the x-coordinate is negative 2 and the y- coordinate is negative 2. So we have negative 2, negative 2. So there you have it. There's how to find the coordinates of a point. Remember the x-coordinate always comes first and then the y-coordinate always comes second. I hope that helped. Thanks so much for watching. Until next time, peace.
