Hi, I'm Adriana Gerdler, a productivity expert with over 20 plus years in the business of productivity and efficiency improvement. When I tell all my clients that if you're a leader, it is really critical that you learn how to delegate. You cannot do it all yourself. So take these tips, implement them, and you will see your organization skyrocket. Where to start. Being an effective delegator means knowing which tasks are suitable for delegation. The best way to do this is to break down all your tasks from a skill level of low, medium, and high. And take a look at all those low-level tasks that are good for delegation, and that's probably the best way to start to get you on that ball and rolling. Another thing you want to consider, too, is if you have a lot of tasks that are repetition, put it in a checklist, standardize it, and that means anybody can do it. Identify the right person. Whenever you're considering delegation, you really got to take a look at the right person. It does not come down to whoever has the lightest workload. It really comes down to the person has the right skill set. Are they motivated? Are they going to be able to do the job? All of that fun stuff. Now, on the flip side of it, you do have to look at workload because one of the things we do in the corporate world a lot is we overload our high producers, and that's not fair. So you may have to do some resource loading in order to get the right task to the right person and to ensure that you spread the wealth. If you know what I'm talking about, write down relevant skills in the comments below. Communicate well and often. One of the biggest things that I see when it comes to delegation is that we, in our own head, and I do this all the time, think that everyone understands or knows what I want them to do. Well, the biggest problem with delegation is that there's these gaps, gaps of information, and we can't make the assumption that everyone can read our mind. We have to make sure we communicate, ensure we tell them about deadlines, expectations, walk it through, and if you have to do it again and again, do it because you want to set that person up for success. Checkups. Just like the doctor's office, we got to go in every once in a while to check in to see how we're doing. It's the exact same thing with delegation. If you're the delegator, then you got to check in with your delegatee and make sure that they understand what's going on and course correct as needed. So don't forget that. Check in with them. I promise you they're going to do a bang-up job for you if you do that. And a PS to the check-in, when someone is doing a really great job, do something super simple like gratitude with a sticky and say, hey, thanks, Kim. Ideally, put it on their computer screen when they're not around, so when they walk in, they're surprised because you know what? They're doing an awesome job for taking on that delegation.
