Speaker 1: Hello, I'm Andrew Malloy, the Automation Wizard, and today I want to go through the basics of using the Overcast podcast player. And I'm going to cover how to actually add a podcast and then play it and the different options. So here I'm just basically mirroring my iPhone, I've got Overcast installed, I've got it installed at the bottom here. If you've just installed it, it may be a different color. The icon colors are an option in the premium, in the premium pay version of Overcast. So I'll open up my Overcast app, and this is my current playlist, basically. And when you open it the first time, this will actually be empty, and it'll probably prompt you in the center to begin adding podcasts to listen to. And you can do that by clicking on the prompt it gives you, or click over here on the plus, or I should say press on the iPhone. So I press that, and it takes me to the directory of podcasts. And this is based on the Apple Podcasts directory. There's some Overcast-specific curation of the different areas as well, different subjects, and actually at the top will have suggestions for you. If you're already subscribed to podcasts, it will have some suggestions based on subscriptions that you already have in your list. So I can go through these, and if you're browsing for a particular podcast and one looks interesting, you can just select it, and then you've basically got two options. You can either subscribe to that particular podcast, or you can choose to just listen to very specific episodes. So if I actually select an episode, I have the option to just play it immediately. And if you play it, then it will stream it. So the other option, the symbol you see here, is to download, so you can download and then play. As I said, the other main thing is to just subscribe to the whole thing. And if I click on that or press that, it will then subscribe to this particular podcast. And up at the top, this is the icon for your downloads. So if I click on, so if I press downloads, it's now downloading the latest episode of that podcast that I've subscribed to. So that will just give you that particular podcast. So down here, Hidden Brain now appears in my list, and it's downloading. If you want to listen to the entire back catalog of episodes, you select all, and then select all at the top, and then you have the option to add all the episodes that are on the list. Or, of course, you can just delete the one episode that you have in your unplayed list. So I won't do that now, because there's obviously a lot of episodes. But what it'll do automatically is add them to the unplayed list. So if I start playing it, then it hasn't actually downloaded. So you'll get this cloud icon, which shows that it'll be a streamed episode as opposed to playing locally. And that's how you add from the directory. If I go back to the directory, you can obviously not only browse, but actually search for particular terms or even the names of a podcast that you know. The other option is to add URL. So the add URL is basically where you're given a podcast feed address and you add it in here. So I'll go to an example. So here's the McElroy family page. They make quite a few podcasts. So I'll select one that I'm not subscribed to. So you may come across podcasts in your browser. And if I go to the latest episode here of this Sawbones podcast, they'll usually be somewhere around where you can actually play it in the browser, a place to subscribe. So if I hit subscribe, it'll give me the options to subscribe. So this symbol is for Apple podcasts. This will add it directly to your Apple podcast player. There may be an option for the overcast player as a separate button. You just have to click that and it will open in your overcast player and add it directly. In most cases, you're not going to see that. So what you really want to do is look for what is the RSS feed or this icon here, the orange and white is the RSS symbol. The really simple syndication link. That's the normal type of link that you used for subscribing to podcasts. The Apple podcast link will actually work as well in overcast, but the RSS tends to be a bit more reliable and open, especially if you want to transfer later to a different podcast type, podcast player. So if I hold and press on that, on the feed, copy, go back to overcast, and then I could just paste this in. And you'll see here, there's a use password. It may be that you're paying for a premium podcast or a podcast that's protected in some way. And they tend to, they can sometimes have a username and password. If they do, then you add the feed and then select username password and select add password. And then it'll give you options to add in a username and password if it requires one. In this case, it doesn't, it just adds, it's just a public feed. So I can just click done on that and it will add it to our list and should soon begin downloading the first episode, which will actually be the latest episode. And it will then appear in my list here. So when you want to play an episode, then it's just the play symbol here. I can skip back and forward 30 seconds. These options can be changed in the settings. I'll show that in another video. Here we have the graphic for the episode. This can actually change depending on the chapter, if that's been set up by a particular podcast episode and feed. So if I swipe to the right, we get the show notes with any links in there. If it exists, you can swipe right to the again, swipe right again. And here we have it split into chapters and time marks. So you can skip around to a particular area in the episode if you need to. If I go all the way to the left, there are custom settings for the particular podcast feed. I'll go through those in another video as well. So that's all you need. On the bottom row, we have these icons here that are the equivalent of the swiping. So I can toggle between the settings and between the show notes and the graphic. The other symbols here, this is for favorites. So you can add it to a favorites list. This is the timer. So if you want to set it to stop after a particular time, you can set that. And you can also select end of episode to simply finish however long the episode lasts and then there. The other is typical iPhone AirPlay icon, where you can share the audio to whatever devices you have available. And that's basically how you add and play podcasts in the Overcast Player. There's quite a lot of other settings and features that I'll go through in separate videos and how I like to optimize the Overcast Player for my own use. And that's it for now. Thanks for watching.
