Speaker 1: I can see that I've got lots of ring glasses going on sorry about that if that's distracting never mind let's get on with the show a question about that I've been getting a lot of is how do you distribute a podcast what is distribution in a podcast okay there's two types of distribution the podcast is obviously video and there's audio let's start with video because it's It's easy, video distribution just means uploading to YouTube or Facebook or any of the video channels, even Instagram or LinkedIn. And that is a physical distribution of your video. But the real question is, how do you do an audio distribution? How do you get your podcasts onto Apple, Spotify, the MTN network, any of the platforms? And I'll say that a few years ago, like five or six years ago, this was such a hard process. It is a pain in the ass to get right, but a lot has changed and things are a lot easier nowadays. So here is essentially how to do it. You need a distribution platform and you also need something to create your RSS feed. There's two really good ones. I'll actually give you three really good ones. Anchor is Spotify's free tool. It's exceptional, it's sexy. And on that, what that means is on Anchor, if you go to anchor.fm, you can upload your podcast, upload the artwork, create your descriptions and choose the stores that you wanna disseminate to. There's like 30 stores on there that it will take it to. The second distributor is Podbean. Podbean same, has amazing backend, makes it very easy for you or someone you're working with to upload the podcast. It goes all into a service base and both those services are free within limits. So if you're doing a thousand podcasts, you start paying for service base, but essentially the core part of it is free. What is tricky though is the first episode, getting your first episode onto a distribution platform is often the trickiest. And that is because, particularly Apple, has quite strong and stringent regulations about getting your first podcast in. So everything has to, what do you call it, that has to fit into their format, otherwise it's not gonna go on. So the way I would just align expectations for distribution in the audio space is that give yourself a couple of weeks to get the first episode up and running, But what's quite nice is from episode two, three, four, and five is almost real time. So within like 20 minutes of pressing go or scheduling a podcast release, it will be across all platforms immediately, pretty much immediately. But just making sure you understand the formats for Apple really and Spotify, they have different formats. You've got to make sure you adhere to those formats and setting yourself up as a podcaster on the Apple platform so that your RSS feed is attributed to you. What that does is it just makes sure that your RSS feed belongs to you and no one can steal it or use your RSS feed in other things. Let's talk about RSS feeds. I think it's not that you have to know anything about it, just so that you understand how an RSS feed works. It'll help you understand how audio is distributed across these things. RSS stands for really simple syndication because that's what it is. And it's basically a piece of code. But what happens is your podcast lives on a server and the RSS feed is constantly talking to the server to see whether there's a new episode or an update to an old episode and distributing it across this RSS feed to all of the distribution platforms. So much so that if you make a spelling error and you've already released the podcast onto the RSS feed, so now your podcast is sitting on the Apple network or the Spotify network, and you notice the spelling error or there's something in the podcast itself that you wanna have taken out, it's very easy to go back to your source file, change the spelling or move the audio around or take an ad out that you didn't want there or word out. If you just as long as you update the source file, the RSS feed will pick that up. It's not immediate the way distribution is, but it might take half an hour, an hour or a day, but it will because the RSS feed is constantly live talking to all of the distribution networks, it will update that. So it's kind of like a live changing thing. If you throw a podcast out and you wanna take it off, you can take it off. Now if you close, if you actually delete or remove the source file, your podcast is not sitting on Spotify and Apple. It's constantly talking to the RSS feed. Think of it this way. When you listen to your podcast on Spotify, it's not actually on Spotify. They're listening to it on your source server file. So if you change something on the source server file, it changes what you listen to in Spotify or in Apple. So that's one cool way to look at it. So they're not actually sitting in Apple or Spotify. It's just when they listen to it, it's diverting to your source server file. So anything you change on the source server file, it comes up there. When you put a new episode on your source server, then it updates immediately into the other ones that now a new episode is there. But that's pretty much how distribution works.
