Speaker 1: This video will teach you the basics of Westlaw. My name is Melissa Collier-Baker and I'm the Subject Librarian for the Bath Business School. You can contact me via email and you can also make a virtual appointment with me via the link on screen. To get started, go to the library homepage at www.bathspa.ac.uk/.library You can also access it via Minerva. From the library website, you need to scroll down and go to Databases A-Z. From here, click on W and then click on Westlaw UK. Click Access Now to enter. The first time you use Westlaw, you'll need to register with your Bath Spa email address. After you've done that, you'll just have to sign in with your Bath Spa credentials to give you access. Once you're in the database, there's a few things you can do. If you hover over the top here where it says Westlaw EDGE UK, if you click on this button, it will allow you to switch between Westlaw UK database, any e-books that we have within the database and also Practical Law. To the side of this, you've got another toolbar that contains all tools and personal features. Underneath, you've got options for cases, legislation, journals, current awareness, the index of legal terms, EU and Westlaw books. This allows you to quickly browse options and search templates for specific content. When you search in the search box, it will suggest what you might be looking for with topics, titles, phrases, etc. You can narrow down your search by hovering over all content. Here you can narrow down your search by content type or topic. You can also use connectors. To view available ones, click on the I button. Alternatively, you can browse via topic. Topic pages contain key materials for certain areas of law. The icons at the top allow you to add things as favourites and set up alerts for this topic. Over on the right-hand side, you can see latest developments for this topic. Let's click into a subtopic. This page will list key cases, legislation, latest cases, journal articles and books for this subtopic. It's a really good way to get an overview of a new topic. The bar on the left also shows lots of related topics. Any time you see these icons here, you can save things for folders, email them to yourself, print and download. To get back to the homepage, just click on the WestlawUK logo in the top left-hand corner. I'm going to run a new search. Clicking on the topic will take me straight to the subject page. However, if I look at terms and phrases, it will run it as a search. I can use the filter bar on the left-hand side to define and refine my search. Each result will show a summary of the case or item. If you can't see this, click on the arrow next to the title. This will expand or contract the result. You can also change the way the results are displayed. Clicking on date will change it to a chronological results list. Relevance matches your search words to the results. There are also options to create alerts, to show more or less detail. At the moment, we're going to leave it as is. To show more or less detail. At the moment, we're seeing the most detail. So all of our results that we see have quite a lot of information within them. However, if you're trying to quickly refine down your results, you could change to less detail. And see things more as a list. You've also got options to copy permalinks. So say if you want to link to something within a document or share it with somebody in a group. You can also save things to folders and email things to yourself as well. Clicking into a result will give you more information. There's a table of contents on the left-hand side that shows you case analysis, primary references, commentary references and practical law references. It also has case analytics. On the right, there is status information such as legislation versioning or case history. References are hyperlinked throughout the text. So anywhere you see a blue text, you can hover over it, click into it and then see that in the database. This is really good for fact checking and referencing. This information should be enough to get you started with the basics of Westlaw. However, I highly recommend that you consider undertaking Westlaw Basic Certification. It's free of charge and will help you to understand Westlaw in more depth. Links to the training materials and tests are on the law subject page, under databases and then Westlaw. I'm available for virtual appointments at any times that suit you. You can book an appointment via the law subject page. 24x7 library chat service is also available anytime you see this logo. It's predominantly displayed on the library website homepage. Thanks for watching and good luck using Westlaw.
