Speaker 1: Using Google Scholar for academic research. Google Scholar is an excellent tool to search for scholarly resources, including articles, abstracts, books, theses, and court opinions. By personalizing your Scholar preferences, you can see what is available for free on the web, and also what is available through the UW Stout Collections. As a UW Stout student, faculty, or staff member, you can also use Interlibrary Loan to order materials that you find by searching Google Scholar. Getting Started Google Scholar can be accessed by typing scholar.google.com into the address bar of your web browser. Before you start searching, click on Settings to customize your preferences. Under the Search Results section, you can decide what types of materials to search and how to view and manage your results. Under Library Links, you can add a library to link your results with their subscription databases. In this case, let's add UW Stout. Type in the name, press Find Library, and then click on the box next to the correct library. Press Save to retain these settings and return to the search screen. Searching Google Scholar Google Scholar allows users to conduct both basic and advanced searches. Click on the down arrow in the search box to see the advanced search options. Using advanced search will allow you to search for resources by keyword, title, author, publication, and date. If you have a citation and are looking for a specific article, enter as much information as you know. If you are searching for information on a topic, use combinations of keywords to tailor your results. Let's try Literacy and Early Childhood Special Education. Press the search icon to view your results. When your results appear, they can be sorted by date using the tools on the left. Clicking on the title of an article will bring you to the website of the organization or publisher of the paper. Sometimes you can find the full text there, but often you will be asked to pay. Instead, click on UW-Stout Full Text or UW-Stout Find It to see if it is available in print in the library, in one of our electronic databases, or if it should be ordered through Interlibrary Loan. As you can see, using Google Scholar is an excellent way to find scholarly resources using a search engine that you are probably already familiar with. If you need assistance using Google Scholar or any other library resources, please contact a librarian by coming to the library or using the contact information given on the library website.
