[00:00:01] Speaker 1: Hold on a second. Is your law firm even paying for the right tools? Hi, I'm Huma, a criminal defense and clemency attorney turned legal tech professional. I've lived the chaos of practice and been in the trenches of litigation, and these are the tools that make legal life so much easier. If your case management software isn't offering these features, it's not the right one. This is part three of my series on tools your law firm cannot afford to work without. A secure client portal is a game changer. Emailing sensitive documents back and forth, it never sat right with me. Hard pass on that one. A built-in client portal keeps messages, files, and case updates in one secure place, so that you and your team have visibility and you can answer questions quickly. Or at an appropriate time of your choosing. A built-in legal AI assistant is also a huge help, but with the right parameters in place. We have all seen those stories of the lawyers getting in trouble because their AI went out to lunch and started making things up. That is not what I'm talking about here. This is different than chat GPT. AI that is built into case management software actually understands legal work. It can help not replace you, but help you with things like document summaries, file searches, and drafting emails without leaving the system. It stays within the bounds and you stay firmly in control. If you missed parts one and two, they lay the foundation for what modern case management should look like. And if your current software can't offer you this, well it's worth asking why you're even paying for it. Your firm should not be investing in tools that don't deliver real ROI or even save you time. Follow and subscribe for more legal insights, tips, and best practices.

Arow Summary
A legal tech professional and former criminal defense/clemency attorney explains that law firms should ensure their case management software includes key modern features. She highlights the importance of a secure client portal to avoid emailing sensitive documents and to centralize messages, files, and case updates. She also recommends a built-in legal AI assistant—distinct from general-purpose chatbots—configured with proper guardrails to help with document summaries, file search, and drafting emails within the system while keeping the lawyer in control. If current software lacks these capabilities, firms should question the ROI and consider switching.

Arow Key Takeaways
  • A secure built-in client portal reduces risk versus emailing sensitive documents and centralizes communication and updates.
  • Integrated, case-management-native legal AI (with guardrails) can assist with summaries, search, and drafting without replacing attorney judgment.
  • Avoid general-purpose AI use cases that risk hallucinations; keep lawyers in control with bounded systems.
  • If your software lacks modern features, reassess why you’re paying for it and whether it provides real ROI and time savings.
  • Modern case management should prioritize security, visibility across the team, and streamlined workflows.
