Speaker 1: This is going to be a quick tutorial for how to use the free version of ChatGPT to help proofread and edit an essay. Here is the prompt that I always suggest using. And I'll copy and paste this prompt into the comments, that way you can just copy and paste it into your ChatGPT. I'm going to attach a draft of an essay. Please give me a list of any spelling or grammatical errors that you find. Please give me a list of suggestions for editing and improving my essay for clarity, coherence, and grammar. Here is my essay draft. Now, there's nowhere to attach a document to this. So what you're going to need to do is go back over to your word processor and copy and paste. Now, in the draft that I created for this sample, I intentionally have some spelling errors, some grammatical errors, just to give you an idea of how it's going to be able to catch these things. Then we're going to click Send, or you can just click Enter. Now, what it's going to do, it's going through, and right now it's rewriting. Now, this is not what you want. The reason is, now this one didn't point out specifically the spelling errors. That's really interesting. Additionally, it will actually point out your spelling errors. So this is just saying to proofread it. What you don't want to do is you do not want to just copy and paste the edited essay right here. You don't just want to copy and paste this, and there's a couple of reasons. More and more schools are building in AI writing checkers, and even though you wrote the first draft of this and had AI correct it, this is going to show up as being a plagiarized paper. It's going to show up as being an AI-generated paper, all right? Trust me. I do this. I know. What you want to do is come down here to this list, Suggestions for Editing and Improving Your Essay, and it's going to give you some suggestions. These are what you want to follow, okay? Now, sometimes, a lot of times with that prompt that I gave you, it will usually right in here tell you if you had spelling or grammar errors, but we can always follow up. Did you find any spelling errors in my essay? Yes, I found a few spelling errors, and I'll tell you that it's free of mistakes. Did you find any major grammatical errors in my essay? Wow, I can't type today. I didn't identify, however, there's areas where your grammar can improve. So it's going to tell you here was the problem, and here would be an example for how to reword it. And then one more thing, and this is going to be especially important for those of you taking research methods with me, is I ask you to write an active voice. So you can give it the prompt, can you please point out any areas where my essay used passive voice instead of active voice, and give me suggestions for how to reword those sentences. I have a typo here. Okay, and then it's going to go through and give you your sentences that were in passive voice, and a suggestion for how you might reword that sentence to active voice. So again, in summary, especially if you're in my class, if you use this tool, do not copy paste these corrections. I will count that as plagiarism. I will count that as cheating. I will give you a zero on this paper. You cannot do this prompt and then just copy paste its suggestions. What I do allow is for you to use this section down here on editing and improving your essay. Please don't take a gamble and think that I'm not going to know or that the plagiarism or the AI checker is not going to find it, because it will. I promise you it's become a big issue. So you are free to use these prompts for suggestions for editing, for finding spelling, for checking your grammar, and for rewording from passive to active voice. Just, again, do not be copy pasting the suggestions that it gives you. And that is a quick tutorial of utilizing ChatGPT for essay proofreading.
