Speaker 1: Internal leadership development programs are very valuable today. The need to engage physicians in the development of population health and quality programs is really key to the success of those programs, but it doesn't happen just by asking them to be involved in it. They need to have a really solid foundation in terms of why this is important, not just to themselves but also to the entire organization and even to the social context of it. The curriculum of a program like this might almost mimic an MBA type of program, but a lot more both condensed and abbreviated. The idea of what is health policy, what are organizational behavior approaches. We talk about the approach to dealing with difficult conversations. I think there needs to be a leadership champion. In our case, the CEO was very much behind it, but we had four vice presidents who each took on a major component of the program, so we had organizational backing. Then I thought that the idea that the physicians are utilized in a way throughout the organization, so we do follow-on programs. The physicians that graduate from this have been great people to tap when we have a major project. When ICD-10 came up, a lot of those physicians were available and willing to help us. We did a major computer system install. They were key among that. Today, six of our chiefs went through the program, so they're very strong advocates for the program. We have two CEOs in the system who went through the program as physician leaders.
