[00:00:00] Speaker 1: Jury selection got underway here at the Los Angeles Superior Court on this first day of trial, in the first trial against social media companies relating to allegations that their platforms have harmed young users' mental health. A California 19-year-old sued Meta, TikTok, YouTube, and Snap, alleging that their platforms addicted her and harmed her mental health, leading to thoughts of suicide and self-harm. We just heard this morning that TikTok agreed to settle this case last night, one day before the trial was set to begin. Snap also settled the case last week. Now, I spoke this morning to the plaintiff's lawyer, Mark Lanier, and talked to him about what he hopes to see come out of this trial.

[00:00:36] Speaker 2: Without a doubt, we will see changes to how these companies operate. The platforms, the features, they've got to have direct changes, or the companies would have to pay money ad infinitum. They're going to want to pay to settle the past, and they're going to want to change the way they do in the future.

Arow Summary
Jury selection began in Los Angeles Superior Court for what is described as the first trial against social media companies alleging harm to young users’ mental health. A 19-year-old California plaintiff sued Meta, TikTok, YouTube, and Snap, claiming the platforms were addictive and contributed to suicidal and self-harm thoughts. On the eve of trial, TikTok agreed to settle and Snap had settled the prior week. The plaintiff’s lawyer, Mark Lanier, said the litigation should drive operational changes to platform features, as companies will prefer settling past claims while modifying practices to avoid ongoing liability.
