Speaker 1: Hey Nick, how are you doing?

Speaker 2: I'm good. How have you been Esteban?

Speaker 1: I've been great, but I had a few questions because I know you're the head of the Achieving the Promise Academy. So I had a few questions about that. Like first of all, what is the difference between a coach and a tutor?

Speaker 2: Ah, yes. Okay. So I'm glad you asked this question Esteban because you know that we're the academic coaching program here at the college, but like many students, we're not quite sure what's the difference between an academic coach and a tutor. You're going to want to meet with a tutor in one of the learning centers when you have a specific question about how to do better on an assignment in a class. You're going to go to the math tutoring center so that you can meet with a math tutor and they'll be able to help you on that pre-calculus problem. They're going to help you with what to learn. Now you're going to want to meet with an academic coach when you also want to get some feedback and help making a plan with how to learn. How can you do better with time management in a class? How can you create a plan to succeed in all your courses, not just this math class? So an academic coach is going to be able to meet with you to ask what's working for you, what's not working so that you can build on your strengths and your passions and what it is that's working well for you. And then you can make a plan on what you want to improve on. So an academic coach might help you identify that you want to go to the writing center because that's part of your plan to succeed overall. But then they might also help you to think about how can you manage stress and how can you make sure that you're achieving your full potential to succeed in college overall.

Speaker 1: Okay, so I was on the website earlier and I also read about an academic advisor. So is there a difference between an academic coach and an academic advisor?

Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, there are differences. And just like academic coaches are going to help you make the most of tutoring, we're also going to help you make the most of academic advising. You always want to meet with an academic advisor so that you can make sure that you are on track to graduate on time. They are the college's official resource for helping you look at the courses you need to take that meet your degree plan, that if you want to transfer are going to be transferable to another institution. And they're also going to ask you questions about your goals. What do you want to do overall? And how does this degree fit your goals? But when you meet with an academic coach, we're going to dive a little bit deeper into again, what's working for you and what you want to do better. And we're going to make sure that you're meeting with your academic advisor because they're crucial to your academic success at the college as well.

Speaker 1: Great. Now the one thing that as a student I'm really worried about is you know, money savings stuff like that. So is the Achieving the Promise Academy program service? Is it free?

Speaker 2: Yes, I'm so glad you asked this. So all academic support services at the college are at no cost to students. So you can get an embedded academic coach in one of the historically hard to pass courses here at the college totally free. You just sign up for those classes and they have a coach in them who can help you to succeed in that course. Or if you request a personal coach, again, it's at no cost to you. All you have to do is be enrolled at MC. If you're taking non-credit classes, you're earning a certificate in a program, you're getting some specific training, you can request a coach. If you're taking credit classes here at the college, you can register for a class with a coach or you can meet with a personal academic coach totally free at no cost to you.

Speaker 1: Thank you so much, Nick. That actually cleared things up a lot for me. So again, thank you so much for this.

Speaker 2: Oh, anytime Estevan, you know that. And we hope that you'll help us get the word out to other students about this academic coaching program here at MC.

Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely. Thank you again. Thanks for watching everyone. If you guys are watching this on YouTube, be sure to like and subscribe for more programs like this from MCTV.
