Speaker 1: Publishing and reading the research papers, reviews and thesis is an essential part of research. However, it is important to know the quality or the impact of the journal in which the paper is published. Usually journals that have rigorous peer review process and higher impact are considered to be more reliable. Hello and welcome back to research and publishing series of explorebio with Dr. Abhishek. In my previous video, I have already explained what a peer-reviewed journal is and how to find if the journal article is peer-reviewed or not. In today's video tutorial, I will quickly explain what is impact factor of a journal and then I will share with you top 3 and simple ways to find out impact factor of a journal with examples. Impact factor is one of the most important measures to determine the importance of a journal or how impactful a journal is in the scientific community. This is basically based on the number of total citations received by all the papers published in that journal during a particular period of time. Thus, journals which publish less number of papers but receive higher citations will have higher impact factor. And journals which accept and publish too many research articles but if they are cited less then their impact factor will be low. The impact factor reflects the average citations received by a journal article in preceding two years. So, every year we may see different impact factor of a journal. Also, impact factors are not available for newly launched journals. But one thing should be noted that the impact factor does not reflect the quality of a particular paper in a journal. Rather, it is a measure of quality of a journal as a whole. Still, as a general rule of thumb, higher impact journals are preferred for publishing. But this does not mean all the journals with lower impact are bad. Now if you are planning to publish your article, often you want to choose a journal based on its impact factor. But where and how to find the latest impact factor of a journal? What most of the people do is just google it to find the impact factor of a journal. But I suggest not to google it. You may get wrong information or impact factor might be of previous years. You can follow one of the three ways I am just about to mention you. The first way which is although a tedious one is to go through the journal homepage and check about the journal information. There you can find the impact factor. Suppose I want to check the impact factor of journal Frontiers in Plant Science. I just go to the journal homepage. Here we clearly see its impact factor. You can also check impact factor under About the journal heading. The second way is to get the latest Thomson Reuters journal impact factor list. You can google it or you may find it on the research gate. Here I have downloaded the entire list from the research gate. The list has impact factor information of almost all the journals of varied disciplines. Here you can also see the ISSN number of the journal. The list is usually sorted based on descending order of the impact factor. You can search and find the journal of your interest. Here I am searching for Frontiers in Plant Science and here we have its impact factor. The third and one of my favorite method to search the impact factor of a journal is using website bioxbio. Simply type the journal name followed by bioxbio. I am again taking an example of Frontiers in Plant Science just to check if it matches with Thomson Reuters list. Click on the link. It will provide you the information about the latest impact factor along with the previous year's impact factors also. So you can decide how the journal performs at a larger time horizon. You can see the impact factor is exactly the same as shown in Thomson Reuters list. You can also check total articles published, total citations received and on the right hand side it will also suggest some of the top journals in that field. I hope this video will help you choose a suitable journal based on its impact factor.
