Speaker 1: Hello my friends, today I will explain you two latest trending technologies that can change the way you look at the world, that is Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. The terms can be confusing, sometimes people think Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality are the same thing. Today we will make it clear. First let's understand what is Augmented Reality. Retailer Ikea created an application that helps shoppers to visualize how certain products will look like in their home before they purchase them. The app overlays virtual versions of the product onto the real-life images of the customer's living space so customers can have a look how it is suitable to their home. Also, you all are well-known about Snapchat applications. In Snapchat, you can add digital content such as additional noise, ears, text and 3D images on your real-time images. These two are just examples of AR applications. We can say in Augmented Reality application, a digital layer is superimposed on the real physical world and it mixes real world with virtual world to enhance user experience. In short, we can say that real world plus virtual world is Augmented Reality. Now let us discuss what is Virtual Reality. Just imagine if you want to feel like you are walking on hillside, moon or you are swimming under sea. Using VR applications, you can move to entire virtual world and you can feel like you exist in that virtual world. In short, we can define Virtual Reality is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment and make you feel like you exist in that environment. It is done by simulating as many senses as possible such as vision, hearing, touch, vibration, even smell. Now let us see brief history of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. In 1968, a Harvard professor and computer scientist, Mr. Ivan Sutherland, created first head-mounted display called the Sword of Damocles. With this device, a user experienced computer-generated graphics that enhanced their sensory perception of the world. In 1990, a Boeing researcher, Mr. Tom Coddle, first coined the term Augmented Reality. Now let us see brief history of Virtual Reality. In 1957, Virtual Reality was first achieved to some extent by a cinematographer, Mr. Morton Hellick. He created a device, Sensorama. It is the first virtual reality machine. It combined multiple technologies to create all of the senses. There was combined full-color 3D video, audio, vibrations, smell, and atmospheric effects such as wind. Later in 1987, a computer scientist, researcher, and artist, Mr. John Lanier, first coined the term Virtual Reality. Now let us summarize the difference between Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. In Augmented Reality, a digital layer is superimposed on the real physical world. In Virtual Reality, computer technology is used to create a simulated virtual world. In AR, it is a mix of real world and virtual world. In VR, it creates entire virtual world. In AR, a user can clearly differentiate between real world and virtual world. In VR, for a user, it is hard to differentiate what is real and what is virtual. In AR, user is not cut off from the real world. In VR, user is completely immersed in the artificial world. He is cut off from the real world. In AR, it only requires AR-compatible smart devices such as smartphone, tablet, laptop, smart lenses, etc. In VR, it requires head-mounted devices or additional equipments to get fully immersed in virtual experience. These are the basic differences between Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. Finally, let us discuss few applications of AR and VR. First application is Healthcare Industry. These two technologies are commonly used in healthcare industry by doctors and medical technicians. Second application is Military Training. These technologies are used for military training in virtual environment and creating virtual wars. Third application is Education. Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality is used for education purpose. It will give better understanding for students. Fourth application is Retail and E-Commerce Industry. These two technologies are used in e-commerce and retail industry for enhancing customer experience and visualizing product before they purchase. Fifth application is Travel and Tourism. Travelers can explore different places and details of that places using these two technologies even before they travel. Sixth application is Manufacturing Industry. Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality used in manufacturing industry for increasing efficiency and productivity of factories. Seventh application is Gaming and Entertainment Industry. We all know that these two technologies are nowadays common in gaming and entertainment industries. I hope that now Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality are very clear for you.
