Speaker 1: you could be missing out. ChatGPT has recently had a new update and if you're not using it to learn a language you might be overlooking one of the most powerful tools for language learning. I've been using it for a while now and it has so many incredible uses which you might not have even thought of. It is easier to learn a language now than it has ever been. So in this video I'll be showing you why ChatGPT is almost the perfect language learning tool, how I actually use it every day and what the new update is really like. Before we dive into these essential tips excitingly the platform that I use to start learning Spanish has a ton of languages on sale right now. StoryLearning have courses for 15 different languages at half price with not only beginner courses but also some intermediate courses as well. The sale only lasts a few days so if you want to get any of the courses at a discount check out the link in the description. I use it for Spanish and it gave me a real head start but now for one essential question. Do you know how ChatGPT actually works? Yeah it's um it's a robot in a little box that can be my guide and grant me three wishes. Or is that the genie from Aladdin? ChatGPT is basically a download of the internet from 2021 which is then connected to a robot brain in the sky. This is called a neural network before the nerds destroy me in the comments. Anyway the robot brain takes the data from the internet and then shuffles it around to create responses to your questions. So keeping that in mind because humans make mistakes all the time and then put them on the internet the robot brain might go on and repeat them. So if you ask it the same question twice sometimes you might get two different answers. Though I will say it's definitely much better than it used to be and excitingly I've got the latest version which I can show you. Full disclosure here what I show you will be the most up-to-date version which currently you have to pay for. So what happens is these updates then get rolled out to the free version eventually so that we can all benefit. So now we know that we can look at how to use it and I'll show you what the latest update is like when it's talking to. Spoiler alert it's actually pretty good. Before we get into that though how do you actually use this in a way that is useful and isn't just copy and pasting prompts into the chat? Well very briefly the most powerful way to learn a language is to find stuff you mostly understand and then just slowly increase the difficulty over time so that eventually you're just using material for native speakers. Well how do we get there and also does that mean having to use content that is made for learners and it's so incredibly boring you have to prop your eyes open with matchsticks just to stay awake. No, just use chat GPT. I'm a beginner in Spanish and I only know the most common 200 words summarize the plot of Jurassic Park in Spanish at a level I can understand. Un hombre rico llamado John Hammond crea un parque temático con dinosaurios vivos en una isla. Los científicos usaron ADN de dinosaurios encontrado en mosquitos fósiles para clonar los dinosaurios. You can get super creative with this simple approach getting stories about subjects you're interested in you can even get it to make up stories for you. Using the most common 200 words of Spanish only write me a short story about a boy named Daniel who runs a dry cleaners with his mother. Daniel es un niño, vive con su mamá. Todos los días Daniel y su mamá trabajan en la lavandería, limpian ropa para la gente del barrio. Make it interesting. It will react to whatever you want to make it say and you can start to create your own story with chat gpt. If you think what it's saying is too difficult you can always write something saying I don't understand make the Spanish easier for me or can you reword that in a way that's simpler with fewer complicated words. For those of you who aren't into fiction you can do the same. Something like summarize the key lessons from a book that you want to read at an intermediate level of French for example you know you get the idea. So this next way is awesome. If you're like me you probably spend time talking to tutors online on something like italki. With a great tutor is such a fun way to spend an hour. If it is not a fun way to spend an hour then maybe it's time to look for another tutor. Anyway you'll probably end up with a load of words in the chat at the end of the class. What do you do with them right? Well one thing that I've been doing is copying and pasting them into chat gpt and telling it something like create a story in Spanish using these words. It must be entertaining fun and engaging. Make sure all of these words are in bold so that it's obvious for the reader to pay special attention to them. What you get is a very short story to read where you can see those words in context and in a way that is hopefully memorable too. I haven't done it yet but I did think that you could print them all out and have like a little collection of these short stories to flick through and remind yourself of these words at some point or another. Also if anyone is good at fixing printers let me know in the comments down below. There have been times when I've needed to type something in Spanish. If it's literally just a short message then you can put it into chat gpt and say check the Spanish here. It's always helpful and there's even correct stuff that I've got from google translate. Although I will say that I've also had Spanish tutors correct what chat gpt has put out so it's not always perfect. Anyway one thing that I did kind of related to this was that I started to write a story. I wanted to see if I could write in Spanish and so I started writing a story about a dystopian future. When I put it into chat gpt it not only corrected but also explained where I'd gone wrong and why. If you find that sort of thing interesting it's not a bad little exercise to try. So how is this new version of speaking and is it any good compared to the accent that it had before? Well let me just say this. I don't know why you'd pay for other AI language platforms on top of what you have here. Without naming names I did briefly pay for an AI platform to try it and it was rubbish. Though this isn't the free version of chat gpt so I do have to pay for each month but it is a beast and actually making this video has made me realize I need to use it a lot more. And also because people ask this video isn't sponsored. Mr gpt doesn't have any idea who I am. One thing to add is that when testing for this video the app would cut out randomly a few times and not answer my question or tell me is experiencing like high volumes of traffic which was annoying. It didn't happen that often and to be fair it hasn't happened in ages. Before we get started let me show you how to use the voice function on mobile if you haven't tried it yet. So open the app, touch the headphones and boom you're good to go. So let me break speaking to the app down into three different levels and honestly the third one is insane. Maybe more than one way. First of all you can just speak to it in the language you're trying to learn. Obviously you can talk to it in any topic that you're interested in and more importantly you can ask it to speak to you at a level that you understand. Well the truth is almost everything. I don't know if you have a little bit of experience in language learning or if you have any advice on how to learn a language. What do you think?
Speaker 2: So obviously you can talk about anything anything that interests you you just have to make sure you
Speaker 1: tell it to speak at a level that you can understand. If it's speaking at a level that's too difficult just correct it get it to change what it's saying and normally it's not too bad. I've been testing it to make this video and it is generally pretty shallow chat but it's not bad if you've got a spare 10 minutes to practice your speaking and you don't have a language teacher right next to you. It's essentially amazingly useful. The other day I had my headphones on and I was chatting with it hands-free whilst I was doing the cooking. In that way it's kind of cool as it will literally talk about anything that you're interested in. So the second way that you can use it and one thing that you might not be that confident in at the minute is your ability to speak in the language that you're trying to learn. That's totally understandable. You can build up your ability to understand the language though. This is where using chat gpt and crosstalk comes in. So crosstalk is where you talk in one language and someone else talks in the other language that you're trying to learn. This is what I did with real Spanish tutors before I started speaking in Spanish. I want you to talk to me in Spanish at a beginner's level but I'm going to speak back to you in English. I want to be able to understand conversational Spanish. Does that
Speaker 2: sound good?
Speaker 1: Very good question. Well I quite like learning languages. I also make videos and I put them on the internet. I'm actually learning Spanish at the minute but at some point I really need to get back to learning Chinese. You know what chat gpt that is a very very long story.
Speaker 2: I could go on but you get the idea. You don't have to speak in the language you're learning
Speaker 1: if you don't feel as confident just yet. One thing I'll say here is that the chat gpt app can't slow down the rate that it speaks because it's text-based. Because of that if you're still new to the language the speech function might still be a little bit quick for you. Try it out, see how you get on. What it can do is use shorter sentences or simpler words to be understandable but it will still speak at the same speed. Or on the other hand what you can do is you can download plugins on your computer and use them there where you can adjust the speed that it speaks out. You won't be able to use them on your mobile but that's life. So this is number three. It is kind of weird but it gets over the fundamental thing with talking to an AI or at least it's a start. I always feel like I'm talking to an AI. It never feels like talking to an actual friend and for that reason I don't think AI will fully replace online tutors. Though for the online tutors who aren't particularly engaging in their lessons they probably do have something to worry about. I'm looking at you Sergio. I made that name up or did I? What I've done before is I've told chat gpt to pretend to be someone I know. I've told it the name of their partner, where they live, what they do etc and then I say imagine we're in the pub just having a pint talking about our day. It'll try to imagine it's your friend though you'll need to feed it a bit more information if you want to actually try and get the right responses from it. I know this sounds a bit odd but it's kind of like a conversation role play and it does come across better than just talking to Wikipedia from 2021. I'll do it in English to demonstrate. So let's have a chat in English. So imagine you're my mate Dave. You've got a girlfriend called Kate and you live in Brighton with your dog Freddy. You've had a long day working as a plumber and we're meeting
Speaker 2: in the pub for a pint. Let's talk about our day. Hey mate, good to see you. Man today was a tough one. Had a couple of tricky plumbing jobs and Freddy decided to make a mess. How was your day?
Speaker 1: Anything interesting happen? I've just been working really hard today. I feel like I've just sat in front of the computer all day and I just need a bit of a break. I hear you mate. Sitting in front
Speaker 2: of a screen all day can be draining. It's good to get out and have a pint. You know I'm working
Speaker 1: hard making some videos for the internet and I've got lots of DIY that I need to do at home.
Speaker 2: That sounds busy. Making videos must be fun though. What kind of DIY projects are you working on at
Speaker 1: home? You know what Dave, I've got so much painting to do it is utterly ridiculous. I could come by and give you a hand sometime. You know what Dave, that would be lovely. Now all this advice is well and good but there are always disadvantages with using a lot of technology like this. Check out this video here to find out what they are and how you can avoid them.
