Speaker 1: Because when you use the fear-based strategies, what essentially happens is you're preparing them to go to a job and have somebody to tell them what to do and threaten them and use fear and anger in order to motivate them. And they'll constantly be in need of somebody to do that in order for them to respond. They'll need somebody to whip them or dangle a carrot before them. But if you can unleash the intrinsic motivations within them, you'll set them free and they'll be free for life to pursue what's inside of them. Believe in your players and speak to their potential. Believe in your players. Dick DiVenzio, the founder of Point Guard College, PGC basketball, wrote a couple great books. And one of the quotes he said, I'll never forget when I attended PGC as an athlete myself, he said, you may not be able to turn your situation into a winning situation, but someone out there certainly can. And I can guarantee there's thousands of people in hospitals around the world who would love to step into your situation and give it a try. And really, I've never lost sight of that quote. And that I might not be able to help this player, but somebody can probably reach this player. So rather than writing off this player and criticizing and complaining and venting, I'm gonna go on a search. I'm gonna go on a hunt. I'm gonna find a way to break through this player because I'm not gonna write off this player. I'm not gonna give up on this player. Now, at some point in time, you might have to make a decision. Okay, this player is not gonna make the team. But as long as they're on the team, I'm fully invested in believing in them and helping them to be successful. Here's some language that can help you with that. I believe you're capable of being a standout player. There's lots of ways to be standout. They might not be a star. They might not be all conference, but they can stand out. And you might need to define for them how they can stand out. I think you can become a great leader on this team. Not everyone's gonna dunk the ball. Not everyone's gonna be able to hit 50% from three. But I think everyone's capable of becoming a great leader with the right tools and the right coaching. Bring it out of your players by using that language. Or you can even demand it from players, but you speak to their potential. You can get intense, but speak to their potential. Even if you're gonna get angry, at least get angry in a positive way. Get angry in a positive way. Speak to their potential. I know you can go harder than this. I know you can. I would consider that, by the way, intensity, not anger. But if you switch over to that anger side and you're really bringing it in that way, then see if you can at least speak to their potential. We're all a work in progress. We never think any of us have arrived in terms of our coaching, in terms of what I would consider becoming a master teacher. A master teacher is able to bring out the best in their players. Bringing out of players what's already inside of them. Versus constantly pulling, constantly threatening, constantly using anger, constantly punishing. Entirely different way of coaching. But I think you'll find it, not only will you find it more life-giving and rewarding, but your players will as well.
