Speaker 1: Lily, it's okay.
Speaker 2: A, B, C, D... What, are you singing to her? People get arrested for this, Mitchell. Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the unscripted Modern Family moments that were kept in the show.
Speaker 1: Whose car fixed me? Friend of your mom's.
Speaker 2: Not now. For this list, we're looking at improvs and off-the-cuff moments that were not on the page, but made it into the final cut. Feel free to go off-script and tell us your favorite Modern Family improvisations. Leave us a comment below. If you like what you're hearing, be sure to check out the full song at the link below.
Speaker 3: Luke, so far, you know, hasn't beaten me in basketball.
Speaker 2: A great scene from the pilot episode of Modern Family is the trampoline basketball game that happens during the end credits. As it turns out, not only was the action unscripted, but so was the game itself. Oh.
Speaker 1: Hi. How's the weather down there?
Speaker 2: It only happened because the production noticed a basketball court next to a trampoline at the house where they were filming. So, they turned the net around towards the trampoline, and according to co-creator Christopher Lloyd, told actor Ty Burrell to play with Nolan Gould and, quote, don't let him win no matter what. Which he did. And for that, we say, well done.
Speaker 3: When the day comes that he does, when, if, you know, if when, he beats me. I'm just gonna be like, well done, well done.
Speaker 2: I've got it. What if I'm the container? There's a thought, you could be... No, Luke. Luke. In season 3's Egg Drop, Luke's eggs are not the only thing that comes crashing down to the ground. Claire also hits the deck after slipping on the cracked eggs on the floor. Luke. Why? And according to both actor Julie Bowen and co-creator Christopher Lloyd, the fall was unscripted. Claire was supposed to slip on the eggs, but landing on the floor? That was, to quote Bowen, raw, unadulterated klutziness. Although, Bowen did predict it happening prior to filming the scene. In an interview with TV Guide, Bowen said that she told the producers, quote, Guys, there's no way I'm not gonna fall. I'm a klutz, I'm wearing heels, there are slippery eggs. She was right. It was funny, and they kept it in. They were supposed to, to learn from this, and, and, we ruined it. In the show's pilot episode, Phil lays out all the reasons he's such a cool dad.
Speaker 3: You know, I know all the dances to High School Musical, so... We're all in this together.
Speaker 2: These include his ability to recreate the dances from High School Musical, and his knowledge of text speech, such as LOL, OMG, and WTF. Although, his understanding of what WTF stands for is not quite accurate.
Speaker 3: I'm hip, I surf the web, I text, LOL, laugh out loud, OMG, oh my god, WTF, Why the Face.
Speaker 2: It's funny, though, and it was initially unscripted. However, Ty Burrell wasn't the one who came up with it. It was actually resident alien actor Alan Tudyk, who came up with Why the Face during his audition for the role of Phil Dunphy. He obviously didn't get the part, but the show's creators loved the line, and asked his permission to use it while filming the episode.
Speaker 1: I've got news for you, Cosette. I got news for you, Cosette. Now, who are Amazing Parents? We are. I can't hear you. We are. Don't you forget it.
Speaker 2: Remember that hysterical scene where Cam and Mitchell lock Lily in the car? Well, if the scene had gone as written on the page, it would definitely not have been as memorable.
Speaker 1: Did we just lock our baby in the car?
Speaker 2: Did you put the keys in the bag? I put the keys in the bag.
Speaker 1: Oh, Mitchell, I told you not to put the keys in the bag.
Speaker 2: While the script did have the couple locking their baby in the car, everything that happened after was pure unscripted gold. According to actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, the scene, as scripted, ended after Mitchell says, Did we just lock our baby in the car?
Speaker 1: H-I-J-K-L-M-N-O-P- Do all four doors have a lock?
Speaker 2: Which means Mitchell singing and Cam trying to break the window was all Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet doing the improv thing.
Speaker 1: We locked our baby in the car and people are judging us. I swear to God, I'm gonna break it. Do not break the window, you'll get glass on her.
Speaker 2: Sir, please tell your wife to relax. Everything is going to be okay. That's a man. Really? If you're on your phone, make sure you go into your settings and switch on notifications. It's one of everyone's favorite modern family running gags. The broken step that Phil is constantly tripping on and is usually followed with the refrain, gotta fix that step.
Speaker 1: For your information, your son is hard at work on an awesome Van Gogh. You gotta fix that masterpiece. Wait till you see.
Speaker 2: The simple gag led to numerous jokes over the show's 11 seasons, but they're jokes that almost never were had it not been for the great Ty Burrell. Because while all but one of the broken step moments were scripted, that one was the first one.
Speaker 1: You sit there and think about the scratch part. That's not good either. You gotta fix that step.
Speaker 2: In the first season, Burrell improvised tripping on the step in a scene and the off-the-cuff moment was such a hit with everyone on set that they didn't just leave it in. They kept bringing it back.
Speaker 1: Oh, Phil. Dad, get up here. On my what? Seriously, I just fixed that.
Speaker 2: Do you agree with our picks? Let us know in the comments. And hey, if you're a fan of the song playing right now, be sure to check out the music video for it right here. And if you think about me too
