Speaker 1: You want to start pursuing, or are currently pursuing, your nursing degree and in your research you keep finding the term accreditation. In this video, we will tell you why nursing school accreditation matters so that you can be ready to make an informed decision about the many program options you can choose. The College Disruptor Subscribe, like, and share this video with your friends so you can stay one step ahead with non-traditional college information. You probably know what accreditation means, but not in this context, and that's why we're here to help you. Nursing school accreditation is a process that ensures that nursing programs meet standards of excellence and are producing qualified nurses. Your accreditation status ensures that no matter where you choose to pursue your nursing degree or what learning model you choose, you will receive the same high-quality education. Here's an example of what it would be like if nursing accreditation didn't exist. Let's say you and your friend are pursuing a BSN degree, but see completely different courses and learn entirely different skills. When you get to work together, it would be total chaos since you didn't receive the same quality level of education. How exactly universities receive this accreditation? They have to meet specific criteria like faculty qualifications, course content, and program quality control. Now that you're aware that accredited nursing schools are the best option for you, and in case you're still not convinced, then keep watching. Since nursing accreditation makes sure that nursing graduates all over the U.S. are educated at the same level, the patients will receive the same standard of care from them. But apart from being vital to ensure the safety of patients, it also has a significant impact at a national level on the opportunities you will have available. What happens if you enroll in a non-accredited nursing school? These are some of the risks. For example, you're not going to be able to receive federal financial aid. Unfortunately, most colleges do not accept transfer credits from non-accredited programs. Also, some employers explicitly do not hire nurses who've graduated from non-accredited programs. So who exactly makes the final call on what college or program is accredited and which one is not? When it comes to nursing education, there are two main accrediting bodies. The first is the Accreditation Commission for Education and Nursing, also known as the ACEN. It's an organization aimed to look after nursing education. It ensures that the education a student receives is dependable, consistent, and safe. The ACEN accredits all levels of nursing education, including the clinical doctorate, DMP specialist certificates, master's programs, post-master's certificates, baccalaureate programs, associate programs, diplomas, and practical nursing programs. The second body is the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and in its short form is known as the CCNE. It is recognized as the spokesperson for academic nursing in the U.S. and focuses on protecting the public's health. They embrace the national programs to guarantee that all nursing students receive an excellent education. The CCNE only accredits bachelor's, master's, and post-graduate levels. Does not having accreditation impact the NCLEX exam? The answer is yes. One of the requirements is that your nursing program must be approved by your state's board of nursing. If you're already in an accredited nursing program, you won't have to worry about this. The problem comes when you're enrolled in a non-accredited program. That means that they're going to have to review whether it has state approval, and if it doesn't have it, you will not be able to take the NCLEX exam. Don't listen to the people that tell you that nursing school accreditation is not important. It's definitely something that you should not take for granted. Nursing school is a profession that requires a license. Therefore, a nursing school must be accredited to provide nurses with the necessary training and education to obtain that license. If you choose a non-accredited program, it does not necessarily mean that you will get poor education, but you will have to deal with essential obstacles. Choosing a nursing program is difficult because there are so many things to consider.
