Getting to know your staff will help you know how to lead them by influence. If you have a mild-mannered employee, you cannot lead them in the same way that you can the outspoken employee. Practice adjusting your approach, tone, body language and choice of words so that you can get the most out of each member of your staff. In order to help with this, find out what makes your staff tick. There are ways to create a work environment they will value and want to stay in, even if you can't give them pay increases regularly. For example, if you have a teacher who is struggling to make it to work on time but has never had that problem in the past, asking the teacher what is wrong and offering assistance with finding them an alternative means of transportation to get to work can help the issue. The tardiness doesn't always mean that the employee should be fired or that the employee is going to quit. Ask about the problem and try to help, especially if you are in danger of losing one of your best teachers.
