Speaker 1: As a result of the COVID-19 health crisis, most New Jersey court hearings are being held by phone or video conference. The following tips will help you to prepare for your court hearing. Prepare for your hearing ahead of time. Make sure you know the correct date and time of your hearing and that you understand how to join the hearing by phone or video. Plan to join the hearing 5 to 10 minutes early, just in case you experience technical problems or need help. Make sure that the device you are using to access the hearing, such as your cell phone or laptop, is fully charged. In order to reduce technical issues, make sure that other devices are not accessing the internet during your hearing. Gather all court forms, instructions, and documents you will need for the hearing, as well as contact information for your attorney and or the courts. If you need an interpreter or an ADA accommodation, contact the court when you are notified of your hearing date. Choose an appropriate location for your hearing. Plan to sit in a quiet, private place. For your security and privacy, be sure that your location is not identifiable. Avoid locations with noises and distractions. Be aware that your background will be visible to others during video hearings. Choose a plain background and be aware of personal items behind you. Mute your microphone whenever you are not speaking. Microphones are powerful. Everyone will be able to hear you shuffling papers, typing, covering the microphone, or making other noises. If possible, use headphones or earbuds with a microphone instead of your device's external speakers. During phone hearings, it can be difficult to recognize voices. State your name each time you speak to help avoid confusion. Direct your questions or comments to specific people on the call by using their names to address them directly. If you are participating in a video hearing, make sure your location is well lit. Use natural light from windows or overhead lights in the room. When able, use lighting in front of you or to your side. Avoid sitting in front of a window or bright lights. You will be able to see yourself on the screen and can adjust your camera as needed. Make sure your camera is at eye level. Look into the camera instead of looking at yourself on the screen. Turn off your camera when you are not participating in the hearing. Your court hearing is important and should be taken seriously. Be sure to dress appropriately for the occasion. Be sure you can focus during your court hearing by giving your full attention and avoiding any distractions. Thank you for viewing this video.
