Speaker 1: There really are now some apps around where you can practice languages for free and even get feedback on your oral production. Look at these examples of me practicing my Spanish.
In this video we're going to focus on 5 speaking apps. Some of these apps work in multiple languages and they all have a free version. This is a great opportunity for you to develop your speaking skills without necessarily having a teacher or a speaking partner by you. Really hope you like the video and as always if you do, please like it, please share it, please comment on it and of course join me on my YouTube channel. Let's get started. Ok, so this first one I'm going to show you is called TalkPal AI. Notice that there are multiple languages that we can use. In fact, look here, you've got another 42 languages that you can work with and in the free tool you get a limited amount of chat each day. Obviously, for more chat and more options then you would need to pay.
Speaker 2: So if you click on chat then it brings you in.
Speaker 1: So I could choose a topic or I can just click here and speak and then click again to send it. So I could say, for example, Hola Emma, ¿Cómo estás? Send that message and then Emma's going to respond.
Speaker 2: Hola Russell, estoy muy bien, gracias por preguntar. ¿Y tú, cómo estás llevando tu aprendizaje de español?
Speaker 1: Ok, so you get the idea. TalkPal.ai with a free option and multiple languages. The next app I want to show you is CanSci.app. I really like this one because it gives you feedback. Let me just quickly show you a bit of video of me using it in Spanish and how it gives me feedback on my use of language. Notice it gives me a bit of feedback here, so I made a little mistake. I should have said, Llevo muchos años apoyándolos. I said apoyándoles, ok? I got the wrong pronoun there at the end, indirect objects or direct objects. So I'm just going to carry on one more time. So it's basically asking me if ever I see a games live.
Speaker 1: One quick thing about CanSci, I've noticed at the moment that they're doing some updates. So it's not actually available, I was using this for a while, but what you can do is sign up your name and of course, as soon as the product's ready again, then you'll be able to start using it. I have to say, I really recommend it. I was using it for a couple of weeks and I found it very useful because I like the feedback feature. Just a super quick break from the video. If you like what you're seeing and you want more free videos on using technology to help you with your language learning, then please come over to teachertrainingvideos.com. Loads of content on the front page. There's a really nice section on language learning apps that you might find really useful if you're learning languages, and also there's a section on AI tools. If you really want to follow my work, the best thing to do is to sign up to the newsletter and that way you'll get updated with all the latest videos, the webinars, the blog posts and the courses that I run. Right, let's get back to the video. The next example is ChatGPT. There's a little app that you can download, it takes just a few seconds and that will allow you to speak to ChatGPT in multiple languages. And it's a method that I used a lot, especially at the beginning before many of these apps came out. So I'm on ChatGPT, I'm just going to quickly demo this. I'm going to click on this button here and just quickly ask, ChatGPT, ¿me puedes hablar en español? Hola, claro, puedo hablar en español, ¿en qué puedo ayudarte hoy? So to do that, all I needed to do was click on this button here, speak, and then click again and then it would reply to me once I've sent whatever it is I want to say. And notice that we've got lots of languages, okay? So you know, you're not only talking about learning English or Spanish, but you've got French and Italian and Polish, which is great. I haven't tried it yet in Polish. Now how do I get this piece of software? Very simple, it just takes a few seconds. If we click over here on these three dots, I'm using Google Chrome and this is important. Come down to the extensions, click on Manage Extensions, and you'll notice that I have one called Voice Control for ChatGPT. Now if you search for Voice Control for ChatGPT, and let's actually just copy that, okay, and we'll jump over to Google and we'll put it in, and what I suggest is actually write Voice Control for ChatGPT or Google Chrome. And it should come up at the top. Sometimes you get advertisements and if you do, look for this, Google Voice Control for ChatGPT, click on it, and you'll see, in my case it says remove from Chrome because it's already on there, in your case it will say add to Chrome. Click on that, you might need to click one other button, and then it will be on ChatGPT. Now when you come back to ChatGPT, it won't appear immediately, you'll need to refresh your browser, or even open your browser again, and you should see that it appears, remember to speak, click, speak, click a second time to send, and lots of different languages, great tool. The next two apps that I'm going to show you are specifically for English, and they're interesting because both of them provide feedback on your performance in different ways. So let me take you through these last two tools, and they are again completely free. So this is actually a product from Cambridge English, it's only for English, start speaking, you can actually use it for free, and basically you're going to answer a few questions, welcome back, do you want to check your microphone, and we're going to just say, dive straight in, answer a question, and you will hear eight questions, and then click on next, okay, the first one you have 10 seconds, and if we click here, my name is Russell Stanard. So I've answered the first question, to answer the question just click to record and then click again, and we can listen to what I've recorded, my name is Russell Stanard, and then I can go to the next question, so I click here to start, S-T-A-N-N-A-R-D, again I can listen or I can just click on next. Now it's going to go through eight questions, and the interesting thing is at the end it's going to analyse and give you information about your level, so the feedback is really more about what level you've got. Now the last tool that I'm going to show you is a complete website for learning English, and it includes a speaking component, so Eigo AI is a complete language learning website for English students, and it's completely free because they make their money from the advertising. Now I've logged in, you will need to create an account, but I'm going to choose a category, we'll go for, let's go for famous people, that's always interesting, and I'm going to scroll down here now and we'll work with this one here. Now if I click here, you'll see what happens is you get a whole series of activities, so it starts with listening, and then after doing the listening there's a reading where I have to read the text and answer the questions, I get feedback on everything. If I go to the listening, then again I listen and then I have to complete the sentences, and again immediate feedback on everything. Now this is the interesting part, I come to the speaking, this is what we're interested in, so what happens is we've got to listen to these sentences and repeat them, so let's give it a try.
Speaker 2: Leonel Messi is a world-renowned soccer player from Argentina.
Speaker 1: Leonel Messi is a world-renowned soccer player from Argentina. So hopefully it's going to recognise my voice and then give me some feedback. And there we are, I get immediate feedback on my sentence, accuracy 93, fluency 99, and completeness 89, not bad, so move now to the next sentence, so click here, again click. Now there's a review section at the end after doing all the speaking activities, there's a review section at the end, there's a writing section that's really interesting because you do the writing and again you get very detailed feedback. Incredibly, this technology is free. Okay, really hope you liked that video, please come over to teachertrainingvideos.com, loads more free content, there's a menu system here at the top and plenty of content on the opening page. If you want to keep up with my work, the best thing to do is to sign up to the newsletter, that way you get updated with all the latest blog posts, the online courses, the webinars and all the new videos. And also there is a free 14-part course that you get sent if you sign up to the newsletter, you get sent a video back every 4 or 5 days. There are no tricks, it basically focuses on the most popular technologies on my YouTube channel. If you want to contact me, you can also contact me from the website and I'm going to leave a few more interesting videos on the screen. Thank you very much.
