Der Spiegel, a weekly news magazine from Germany, uses Openary, an AI product from a Berlin startup. Der Spiegel uses the AI-based platform to allow users to air their opinions on an article in real time and also create interactive data visualizations. AI in the media industry requires huge amounts of data. This data is often unstructured, which makes technologies like deep learning and natural language processing key players in this industry. The requirement of huge data also brings about authenticity verification concerns, copyright and fair use concerns and corporate accountability concerns. These concerns are further escalated by power asymmetries among big and small media outlets. However, the World Economic Forum is positive that media outlets will form partnerships to promote AI.
