Speaker 1: Hey everyone. Welcome back to the vlog. I'm Maya. And I'm Andrew. So we know the transition from high school to college can be really difficult. So today we're going to walk you through some of the resources that we have on campus that really help guide you through

Speaker 2: this change. Whether it's just learning how to go to your professor's office hours or needing help getting an essay proofread by a student advisor, there are a multitude of resources available at Whitman to help you succeed in a rigorous academic environment.

Speaker 1: So today we're going to be talking to the director of the Academic Resource Center as well as showing you some of the other departments on campus that help support you outside of

Speaker 2: the classroom. Let's go. The Language Learning Center provides help or support to anyone in the Whitman community who's looking to acquire or develop their skills in a second or third or even fourth or fifth language. You can catch the afternoon news from Beijing, you can curl up on the couch of the German newspaper, or just meet up with a group of classmates to watch and discuss a French film. The Center for Writing and Speaking, also known as the COWS here on campus, is committed to helping Whitman students writing and their speaking skills. The COWS will employ student tutors who can provide one-on-one consultation in writing and speaking to all Whitman students. Here you can get help on writing a senior thesis or a paper for class, or if you just want to talk about your encounters text, head

Speaker 1: on over to the COWS. So I'm sitting here with Rebecca Frost. Rebecca, why don't you tell me a little bit about yourself and where we are right now. Sure, we are in the Academic

Speaker 3: Resource Center. My official title is the Director of Student Success and Disability Support Services, but ultimately I oversee the Academic Resource Center and the services

Speaker 1: that our office provides. So what kind of services does this department offer for students?

Speaker 3: Sure, we offer one-on-one tutoring for students that might be struggling in some of their classes. We oversee our Student Academic Advisor Program, which is a pretty unique program to Whitman. We also offer one-on-one academic coaching, so if students are struggling with time management or organization or procrastination, I typically will meet with some of those students on a one-on-one basis. I also oversee all of the Disability Support Services, so if a student has a learning disability, a mental health concern, or a temporary disability like a broken leg or concussion, I work with those students to make sure that they have their appropriate accommodations for their classrooms. One, make sure that you are confident in how you manage your time. The second piece of advice that I have is to ask for help and use help when it's offered. Sometimes we just have a culture of if I'm asking for help it means I'm not smart enough or I don't have enough skills for the class, but we really foster a culture here that we want students to ask for help. We want them to be successful. So that is my other piece of advice is just be brave and ask for help.

Speaker 1: Well that does it for this week's vlog.

Speaker 2: Thanks a lot for tuning in everyone. We hope that you got to learn something new as you followed us around and we showed you some of our favorite academic resources on campus. I know that for me, it feels awesome to know that my education and academics are a top priority.

Speaker 1: We hope that you'll join us for our next video.

Speaker 2: Bye.
