Speaker 1: Hi everybody, today we're going to talk about the registration process for your medical interpreter certification. I'm going to give you a list of requirements that you will need to fulfill. We're going to go over the steps that you need to take for registration. You're going to want to write this down so go get your pen and paper and let's go. Hello again, welcome to Interpreting Simplified. For those of you who haven't met me yet, my name is Jeanette. Bienvenidos a Interpreting Simplified. Today we're going to talk about the registration process. What does the registration process look like? Is it easy? Is it long? Are there a lot of requirements? Well we're going to go over all of that today and it's fairly simple. You're going to bear with me because I wasn't able to memorize both websites. I have trouble memorizing scripture. I have, I could not memorize this either so I'm going to be referring to my notes from time to time. So the first step is paying the fees. CCHI has an initial fee of $231 that includes a non-refundable $40 application fee and the $191 for the core CHI examination which is the written test and that's valid for six months. NBCMI has a registration fee of $35. The second thing they're going to need from you is identification. They need to make sure that you are 18 years of age or older. So for that you can submit any valid ID, driver's license, birth certificate, or passport. The third thing that they're going to need is proof of general education. So for that it's going to depend on the country that you went to school in. So in my case my proof of general education would have been a GED or a high school diploma from here, from the United States. This is where I went to school. If you went to school in another country then you provide the diploma or high school equivalency, whatever it looks like in your pertaining country. That's what they mean by general education. It's proof of higher education. I think they also accept college credits or a college degree. That's all proof that there was a higher level of education according to how they describe it. You're going to need medical interpreter education. What is that? So medical interpreter education is the 40 hours that I keep talking about in the previous videos. So NBCMI actually takes 40 hours of the medical interpreter education, the online course, or they also accept three hours of credit of medical interpreters interpreting coursework. If you have that then you don't have to go through the 40 hour online course. And you can check with NBCMI to see what they consider a valid three hours of credit of medical interpreting coursework. CCHI, they just require the 40 hours medical interpreting online course. There aren't any other options for that, for the medical interpreting education. Other thing that they require is the oral proficiency proof in the target language. What is target language? So you're going to hear the term source language and target language throughout your medical interpreting journey. The source language is the language that is being spoken. And the target language is the language that is being interpreted into. The target language is the your non-native language. And I'm going to have to read this from my laptop because the options, there's a list of options. So I'm going to read what it says. Candidates must submit proof of oral proficiency in the target language by submitting a BA, an MA, a PhD, or any other degree from an institution of higher education where the target language is spoken. Or a high school diploma from a high school in a country where the target language is spoken. Or 24 plus semester college credit hours for the target language. And you can check NBCMI for more details about that one. Now, if you don't have any of this, which for me in my case, I didn't because I didn't have any of this from the target language. That's when you would take the language assessment test that I mentioned in the previous video. Either one of these is proof of your proficiency in the target language. So that's it. So what do you have to do? You have to pay the fees, you have to submit proof of ID, proof of general education, medical interpreting education, which is the 40 hours of the online course. Or for NBCMI, the option of the three hours credit of medical interpreter interpreting course. And your oral proficiency proof in the target language. If you don't have that, then it would be the language assessment. So those are the five steps for the registration process. Again, generally they're similar, but you also always want to confirm on the website once you've chosen which one you're going to go with. Because sometimes these requirements that I'm sharing with you have been changed, updated. So I just want to make sure this is just a general review. For specifics and actual registration steps, you want to refer to the website on those. I hope this was helpful. Again, I'm sharing with you based on my experience and the process that I've been through. I'm not endorsing anybody and I'm not recommending one or the other. It's really a matter of choice. So let me know if you have any comments or questions in the comment section. And as always, I ask you to subscribe, hit the notification button, or click like so I can be here for you. Thank you for watching and I'll see you guys next time.
