Tumbler Ridge school shooting leaves six dead (Full Transcript)

[00:00:04] Speaker 2: She was the last person who ever deserved this.

[00:00:06] Speaker 1: A tiny Canadian town just suffered one of the country's worst school shootings in recent history. Here's what we know so far. Police first received a report of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School just after 2 p.m. local time Tuesday. Around 2.30, alarms sounded at the school and a lockdown was ordered.

[00:00:24] Speaker 2: I was just getting off my spare block when the alarm went off that I've never heard before and our principal goes throughout the halls and she's saying people close your doors, it's lockdown. Then we realized how serious it really was so we all barricaded up the doors.

[00:00:37] Speaker 3: Upon arrival there was active gunfire and as officers approached the school rounds were fired in their direction.

[00:00:44] Speaker 1: Officials say police were at the school within minutes but they found six victims already dead, both students and teachers. Police have now identified the suspect as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootzelaar who was also found dead in the school with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police say they believe Rootzelaar killed her mother and stepbrother before heading to the school saying they've been called to that home before.

[00:01:09] Speaker 3: Police had attended that residence on multiple occasions over the past several years dealing with concerns of mental health with respect to our suspect.

[00:01:21] Speaker 1: Investigators have not yet determined a motive for this tragedy. Flags across Canada were lowered on Wednesday. British Columbia declared Thursday a day of mourning. Here's the Prime Minister.
