Speaker 1: So when I first started making videos years and years ago, crappy skit videos, of course, I would see these videos and go, how do they get that awesome film look? And I used to see like, oh, the Sony FS 100, I think it was called, or like the Canon 70D. I was like, oh, that's what I need. I need this camera, I need this camera. And those looks you really don't get from those specific cameras. It's a lot more of an older film look that you can get it from. And so you need those older cameras. And there's ways that you can add effects to kind of make it look like that look, but it generally doesn't have that same look and feel. It doesn't feel as natural. But there's a way to get that classic film vintage look. And that's with the answer. So they reached out to me and I said, oh my gosh, do you want me to do this review? Because you think my videos are so funny, entertaining. And they went, well, you know, they're pretty educational and you think you do a good job explaining things. And so we'd like you to talk about Dehancer. So here we are. I don't need to send this video for approval for them. This is going to be a totally unbiased review. So what I'll be using is Dehancer Pro. But what is Dehancer Pro? So it's an effect that helps emulate that authentic film like look. Now you can use it for video software such as Premiere Pro, Dimension Resolve. You can use it for photos like Lightroom. They do even have a phone app that you can use as well. So you can edit on the go. In this tutorial review, I'll be using Adobe Premiere because I use Adobe Premiere. So that makes sense. So once we get Adobe Premiere open, we'll go to the effects tab. We'll type in Dehancer. And then we can grab that effect and drag it onto our footage or adjustment layer. Now, the biggest thing is once you drag it on, it's not going to be, whoa, this looks so great. It's not just a drag and drop tool. So if you're looking for something, you can just grab something, throw it on. And wow, this looks really cool. This is not going to be the software for you. You're going to have to adjust the settings to get a desired look that you're looking for. So if you're looking for that quick and easy solution, like I said, this might not be for you. But if you enjoy that fine tuning and really customizing your look, you might really enjoy this. So if our footage is shot long, the first thing you'll want to do is just the input. So now there's a drop down menu with like Rec. 709, a few options. But you can choose your camera. And that's going to give you a list of cameras that you can choose from. That way you can get the correct conversion of your camera. So I'm using the Panasonic S1H and S5 2X for this review. So we'll click on that one. Now, once we set our camera, it's going to look a lot better than it first did. So now from here, we can go ahead, tweak exposure, temperature, tint, and we can then head over to the film tab. And here you can select from a variety of film profiles. Now, this is where you can really experiment to see which one fits best for your scene that you enjoy the most. One thing I really do enjoy is that with each effect, you can toggle each effect on and off. I'm big, whenever I light things, I turn it on, off, on, off, on, off, on, off, on, off, just to kind of see how it's affecting it. And so I love being able to do that here. So one of the big features for the Dehancer Pro is the film grain. So this isn't just a cheap, artificial looking grain you get just by slapping on the noise effect from Premiere Pro. It really feels like it's a lot more a part of the footage that it's giving a very organic, burnt in feel. So as we can see, compared to the Dehancer effect and just the noise effect of Premiere, how it doesn't, it feels a lot more natural and it feels more a part of the footage opposed to just something that's sitting on top of the footage. And from here, too, you can change how the grain looks from different cameras and playing with it. So that way, maybe it's a little bit more subtle, a little bit more in your face. And there's a lot of ways you can really adjust and play with it. Another feature they have is the Halation and Bloom effects. It's going to help make those bright, overexposed areas really spread out and give power to it. And it gives it that dreamy, nostalgic quality. It gives it kind of like that vintage Instagram filter look. And it's cool. It really looks well, especially when you have lights that are seen in the shots. So I think it looks really cool. And if you get a look that you absolutely love, you can save it as a LUT for future projects. That way, you don't need to write down all your settings or you don't need to take a screenshot or a picture and then you can recreate later. So it's a simple thing, but it's cool. It's there. And then I think I mentioned that there's also a mobile app, too. So while I haven't actually tried it yet, it seems like it's a fun way to give your phone footage that cinematic flair. Hey, hello. It's me again. I just want to jump in because I realized as I was editing the review, I realized I didn't really talk about the film damage. So I wanted to jump into that real quick. So obviously, the big things this software offers is film grain, film halation, and film bloom. But also, film damage is another aspect of that old vintage look. Because as we see in the movie, has anyone seen the movie Sinister? Which, great movie, by the way. Haven't seen the second one. Not heard great things. But in that movie, Ethan Hawke is watching old 16mm footage. So we can kind of see that damage to the film. And so it resembles that where you can really play with that. So we can take something, look at the film damage, and be able to choose how we want to emulate. Whether it's 65mm, 35mm, 16mm, 8mm. We can click it and we can play with it and see that damage. Now, you'll notice there's no damage happening because we didn't enable the effect. Which is a weird issue with the software. If you don't have an effect enabled, it doesn't work. It doesn't showcase it, which is strange. It also does that in Adobe Premiere with any effect in Premiere or After Effects. Something we'll have to work on. We can see that damage. I didn't enable it again. What is wrong with me? We can play it and we can see that really vintage 16 or 8mm look. I feel like I'm Michael Cole right now. For any wrestling fans out there, specifically WWE. Michael Cole is, I think, very unanimous. Not unanimous. Notorious for always saying vintage. Oh, vintage Shawn Michaels with a super kick. Vintage AJ Styles. Vintage Undertaker with old school. RKO on the door. That's vintage Orton. Just, I don't know. Made me think about it. If you like Michael Cole or know Michael Cole. Not in real life. Oh, if you do know him in real life. Leave a comment down below. Now, something else I want to talk about is the ability to add vignettes. Now, vignettes is something that we could add in Lumetri Color as well. We can come in here. We can play with it. Whether it's bright or dark or midpoint. If it's closer or further. The roundness of it. The feather of it. They have all these tools here in Dehancer Pro. But something I really enjoy with it is that we can change the center of the X and Y axis of how the effect is overall affecting our image. And I think it just kind of gives a little bit more flexibility than the actual vignette in Lumetri Color. And I think because it's also built in to the software. It also plays with all the other effects as well. Now, there's other effects that we can play with as well. But you can just kind of play with those as you go. But those are some of the main ones that I enjoy using. At least when I was using the software. Those are the ones that I enjoy using. So, enjoy the rest of the video. Now, I did mention that I like the fact of being able to enable and disable the effect to see how it's going. But the software itself is pretty resource heavy. And a great thing is they're actually very upfront with it on their website. Which is great that they give you the specs that would be best suited for working with the software. So, if you're working with higher resolution footage and adding all these effects like grain, halation, bloom. Your computers can start getting a little bit slower, laggy. Now, Dehancer isn't for everybody. If you're looking for that more crisp, modern digital look. It's not going to give you that. Dehancer might feel a little bit more limiting. This is specifically designed for that analog film vintage look. So, if your product demands more slick color correction. You might be better looking at a different software. Now, another thing is Dehancer Pro isn't cheap. It's going to be, it's a luxury plugin. And if you're a professional filmmaker, it could be a worthy investment. But if you're just trying to make your family vacation videos look more cinematic. Or you're dealing more with straightforward company promo videos. You may want to check your wallet first. However, they do offer flexible licensing options at like 3, 6, or 12 months. Which is cheaper than buying the full product. But also the benefit of buying the full product is that you own it. So, it's a one-time payment. Opposed to Premiere, which we're using here. Is that I have to keep paying a monthly fee. So, it's cheaper in the forefront. But in the long run, it's going to be a lot more expensive. So, I think that's a big benefit to Dehancer Pro. Is that you buy and you own it. They also offer variations of the software. So, if you just want the film grain. You can buy just the film grain. If you just want the bloom inhalation effects. You can pay for those separately. So, you do have the ability to pick and choose. And then maybe buy later down the line. My final thoughts. Overall, I really enjoyed the look and flexibility of Dehancer Pro offers. I think it's a really great option if you're chasing that authentic film look. There's a lot of fun things to play with and adjust. And you can really stylize in a lot of different ways. But that said also, it's not for everyone. As the price could be a big sticking point. And it does have a specific look. That if that's something that is in your style. Or you don't need it. May not be necessary. So, obviously I'd recommend downloading the demo. To make sure that your computer can handle it. And also that you enjoy the look and the feel of the software. Because I think we've all been there. Where we've seen how something works. We buy it right away. And then we just hate the layout. We hate the feel. And it just was something we wasted on. And as I said earlier. Dehancer actually did reach out to me. And asked me to do this review. And if you use the promo code CALVISIONS. They're going to knock off 9.8% off your purchase. But you know what? I said to them. Hey, why don't we round it up? Make it even 10%. It's no extra cost to you. And helps me make more of these videos. Oh god, he's not funny.
