Speaker 1: Our situation we're representing is nurse-to-nurse conflict and involves an experienced nurse bullying a newly hired nurse.

Speaker 2: I'm Parker, I'm a newly hired nurse and I was told to come and shadow you to get oriented to the unit.

Speaker 3: When you're late today, we need to get started on blood pressure.

Speaker 2: Okay. You want me to do it?

Speaker 3: Yeah, you need to do it.

Speaker 2: Okay. How are you today?

Speaker 3: I'm doing well.

Speaker 2: Good.

Speaker 3: Wait, that's not right. That's not right. Do it again.

Speaker 2: What's wrong about it?

Speaker 3: Well, you didn't measure for one thing.

Speaker 2: Oh, okay. I'm sorry.

Speaker 3: It's not one inch above his antecubital space.

Speaker 2: I'm sorry. Okay. How are you doing today?

Speaker 3: Oh, good. How are you doing, Vernali?

Speaker 2: I'm good.

Speaker 3: My favorite PCT.

Speaker 2: Okay, it's 120 over 80.

Speaker 3: That's perfectly normal. I don't think you did it right, but I'll take it.

Speaker 2: Okay. Water?

Speaker 3: Yeah, sure. Oh, don't worry about it, Vernali. How about you go get it?

Speaker 2: Oh, I don't even know where the kitchen is. Can you show me?

Speaker 3: Well, you can find it. Just ask somebody at the nurse's desk.

Speaker 4: Okay.

Speaker 3: Let me get a little quick. We got other stuff to do.

Speaker 4: Would you like to go out for lunch today?

Speaker 3: Yeah, let's go. How about some Moe's? Okay. Chick-fil-A? It's on me. Because you're just my favorite.

Speaker 2: Okay. So my job is done for the day. I'm just going to go take a nap.

Speaker 3: Thank you, Vernali.

Speaker 2: Is there anything else that you need?

Speaker 3: Can I have my pillow, please?

Speaker 2: Okay.

Speaker 3: Hey, can you get him another pillow, Parker?

Speaker 2: Another pillow? Yeah, he needs another one. Okay, where's the supply closet?

Speaker 3: I don't know where it is. Just find it.

Speaker 2: Okay.

Speaker 3: She didn't treat you okay? No. She's new. I don't know if she's good or whatever. She's been fine. She's been okay? Yeah. Hey, Parker, can you pick that up?

Speaker 2: How did he get on the floor?

Speaker 3: I think he dropped it.

Speaker 2: Okay. Here's your new pillow. I'm sorry about that.

Speaker 1: It's okay. Thank you.

Speaker 2: You're welcome. Is there anything else that you need?

Speaker 1: I think I'm okay.

Speaker 2: Okay. Is there anything else that we need to do? Look over his charts or anything?

Speaker 3: That's about it for now.

Speaker 2: Hey, y'all. Can I talk to y'all about something? Sure. So now, I just got hired a couple days ago. I'm in my first shift. I just kind of feel like one of the nurses is kind of bullying me. What do you mean? Well, on one of my shifts, he was telling me to do stuff that I feel maybe is more the PCT's job, not mine. I don't know if it's just because I'm new, or I just don't know what to do about it. I just feel like he was kind of rude. So there's only one guy, so we all know who she's talking about. Oh, yeah. So it wasn't Grinnelly? I wasn't really trying to say names. I don't want to get anyone mad at me or anything.

Speaker 5: She's been trying to talk to her since she got here, and he always does. Like, every new person that comes, he always makes people do that. So you're either going to have to stand up or just let him know you went to UAB, you went to the new, like the best school, so you need to let him know what the deal is, that you're not going to be doing this.

Speaker 6: You can try to go to the charge nurse, but Tim and the charge nurse are tight. Nothing's going to happen. You just have to understand, when Tim and Grinnelly are here, she's useless. She's in the break room sleeping. She's on the phone. They're going to get lunch. It's just a fact.

Speaker 5: Whoever has her patient is what you're going to be doing.

Speaker 7: Okay. Hey, Parker, can I talk to you for a second? Hey, you want to talk to me? Yeah, I was thinking, you really should talk to the charge nurse. Okay. Is that a better plan than just, like, blowing it off or confronting him? Yeah, I think so. You shouldn't have to deal with that, because that's just wrong for him to treat you like that. I mean, I would try talking to the charge nurse first, and then if you have to, then go talk to the nurse manager.

Speaker 2: Okay, thank you.

Speaker 4: The first scenario depicts a charge nurse handling the situation in a non-therapeutic way.

Speaker 2: Hey, can I talk to you for a minute?

Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, who are you?

Speaker 2: Oh, I'm Parker. I'm the newly hired nurse. Right up top there, Parker. Hey.

Speaker 1: What can I do for you?

Speaker 2: I just want to talk to you about a situation I was going through.

Speaker 1: Yeah.

Speaker 2: I feel like I'm sort of being possibly bullied by one of your nurses, and I didn't want to make a big deal of it, but...

Speaker 1: Who's the nurse?

Speaker 2: Tim.

Speaker 1: I love Tim.

Speaker 2: Oh. He's great. Great guy. Yeah, he's a great guy, but I feel like he was kind of putting me down and making me have to do, like, PCT work, and I just wanted your advice on what I should do.

Speaker 1: Okay, okay. Well, Tim's my best nurse. Got to throw that out there, right? Yeah.

Speaker 5: Best guy.

Speaker 1: Yeah, he's good. So, you're new. You're going to have to do some of the work, okay? I'm sorry. You're a rookie, all right? We drafted you. You're a rookie.

Speaker 2: Okay, well...

Speaker 1: But maybe I'll give Tim a talk, okay? How's that sound?

Speaker 2: Thanks.

Speaker 1: All right. Is that all?

Speaker 2: You good?

Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you. All right, put it there.

Speaker 3: Okay.

Speaker 1: All right, thanks, Parker. Zach, my man. Tim, my man. All right. Hey, lock it, lock it. Yeah, all right. How you doing, Tim? What can I do for you, man? Hey, man, I heard you need to talk to me about something. Kind of. Yeah. All right, so the new girl, Peter Parker? I don't know. Whatever her name is. I've seen her. Yeah, I... She was giving me lip about you. I don't know. You sure where she got that? Can't even put on a blood pressure cuff, man. That's on me. That's on me for hiring her, okay? Yeah. All right, but look, I'm just going to get someone else to show her the ropes. You don't have to worry about it, all right? You're my best guy, all right? Hey, we still on for drinks Saturday night? You know it. Let's go. Let's talk about... Hey. Let's do it. Let's do it. Let's go. All right, get back to work. All right, go.

Speaker 4: The second scenario depicts the charge nurse handling the situation in the correct therapeutic way.

Speaker 2: Hey, can I talk to you for a second? Yeah, yeah, of course. How are you doing? I'm Parker. I hire nurses. Okay, good. I just wanted to talk to you about a situation. Is that okay?

Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, of course. Could you emphasize a little more on the situation?

Speaker 2: Yeah, okay. So I was shadowing, I guess you would want to call it that, Tim, one of your nurses, and I just kind of feel like I'm being possibly bullied. I understand that I'm a new nurse, and I'm not going to have the most important job or anything at first, but he was kind of putting me down and making me do things that I feel like other hospital workers, it's their job to do, and I just didn't really know what to do about it.

Speaker 1: Okay. Were there any other nurses or PCTs or anyone involved?

Speaker 2: Yeah, there was a PCT involved.

Speaker 1: PCT? Okay, okay. I understand your concerns. Has anything else happened with Tim besides that?

Speaker 2: Just kind of putting me down. I feel like that was probably it.

Speaker 1: Okay. Well, I will talk to Tim about that, and I will resolve this issue for you, okay? And for now, just since you're new and stuff, I'll put you with a whole new different nurse just so you can get the swing of things here, okay? Okay, thanks so much.

Speaker 2: Is there anything else I can help you with? No, that's it.

Speaker 1: All right, I'll definitely talk to him. Thank you. Zach, my man. Hey, Tim, I actually need to talk to you about something real quick. Okay. All right, cool, cool. So one of the new nurses today, Parker, she brought up some concerns. She said that you've been kind of bullying her and harassing her a little bit. No, she's a new nurse. She's got a break for me, man. Okay. Well, I just wanted to hear your side of the story. Like, can you emphasize a little bit on it?

Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, she came in. You know, I tried to give her some tests. I mean, she barely put on the blood pressure cuff. You know, I got Bernalde over here. You know, I let Parker do all the tests because Bernalde, she's been working all day.

Speaker 1: Okay, well, I mean, Parker, she's very qualified. You know, she went to UAB, best nursing school there is. So she's very qualified. You know, she is new. I mean, you remember when you were new, you had to kind of get in the swing of things, be shown the ropes a little bit. I guess you're right. You know, if you could just be open-minded and understanding with her, that would be great. For now, I'm going to assign her to a new nurse. But, you know, you need to be more understanding and open-minded. Also, it was brought to my attention that you and Bernalde were kind of having a little thing. You know, this is the first time you're hearing about it, so I just want to tell you to keep this as a professional environment, okay? All right. And, you know, this is an interdisciplinary team, so we need to designate tasks that everybody and everyone works together to get the client better, all right? I understand that. Anything else for you? That's it. All right. Thank you.

Speaker 2: Hey, you wanted to talk to me? Yeah, I was thinking that you should talk to me. Is that all? You good?

Speaker 1: Yeah. Thank you.

Speaker 2: All right. Put it there.

Speaker 1: All right. Thanks, Parker.

Speaker 2: Hey.
