Speaker 1: The person you are now, the director, producer that you are now, working on The Revenant, if you had any advice to Alejandro directing, producing his very first film, what would that advice be?

Speaker 2: Well, I think the best description that I have, in a way, have been made of directing and producing a film has been done by Stanley Kubrick. And I think he said something that always I remind me, it reminds me that is the most ultimate truth about directing and producing a film, which is basically he did a metaphor or about like doing, producing or directing a film is like as if trying, as if you, it feels as if you are trying, it's the same as trying to write a poem as you are riding in a roller coaster. And I think that's a perfect description of how it is. You know, in a way, if you're a filmmaker, that's how it will feel because in some way you are trying to do poetry and all your artistic vision and all the notions and metaphysical quest and all the themes that you want to explore and all the freedom that you need to do your imagination explode. But at the same time, production is a roller coaster that is very physical, absolutely uncontrollable, based on a lot of physicality things that are completely out of your control. And you have to be writing the poem as you are like that, and the locations collapse, and the budget is limited, and the actor is mad, and blah, blah, blah. as you are doing your poetry. And that's exactly what happens. So I think that balance of film differently from other arts, I think is more close to, in a way, architecture. Architecture in a way, there's a vision, there's a mission, but there's a lot of depending in another people, and it's a very collaborate art, differently from music, or from painting, or from writing. So you, it's a very intervene nature of that. And you know, fortunately it costs a lot of money. And that's where really get complicated and at the same time contradictory and at the same time, very complex and exciting. That's why what we do is very, very exciting in that sense because it's so opposite the nature. Cost a lot of money, but at the same time, it can be a form of art, of human expression. So I have learned, I think, during these years, and now that's the way I see it, and that's what I will say to anybody that is embarking, is that if we as producers, let's say, we pretend as these crazy people that doesn't believe in global warming, that we can't control the nature, and that we are the masters of nature, I think we will hit the wall. The same as producers, if we think that we can't control the beast completely, I mean, what really the film suddenly start demanding as a creature, as a living thing that start to develop itself, if we are not humble to listen and sometimes go to the extremes to to serve that, then we become just toothpaste producers, or choose producers, or, you know, what we are dealing here is a very complex thing. It's not a controllable product. It's not a shoe. It's not a toothpaste. We cannot pretend that we control everything. And that's why to me, what we are doing, I truly believe that we have to be a little crazy. And I'm not saying this lightly. Crazy in a way that you have to bet a lot of money in something that you have to feel incredibly passionate. You have to have an incredible clear vision and a mission with a great team. Embark yourself in that. Know that you can really fail badly. Most likely you will fail. But if you succeed, and you surrender to the process, risking almost all, you probably can get a little bit of the beautifulness of transport people to another level of conscious emotion, and you reveal something about life in a different way. And that's a lot. For me, that's the only thing that I like. If one of the films, in a way, get the mystery and just reveal something in a different way to any audience in the world, I think to get that is so difficult. Again, this is not a toothpaste, this is not a bag, this is not, no. This is something that is in layers of complexity of the human experience, that when great cinema with entertaining, exciting things, but reveals something of our human nature, if you surrender humbly to that, that costs money, that costs your life, you have to get out of your family, you have to get out of your comfortable zone, you have to leave everything what you feel comfortable. That, all of us, I think we did a lot of that. So when people in a way said, oh, they were out of budget, let me tell you, nobody will go to a film because the guy's wearing a schedule and on budget. Nobody gives a shit about it. What the people gives a shit, it's how good the film is. You know what I mean? That's what really we all have to know. And I'm not saying that you have to be responsible, no. I come from a third world country, and every film of mine has been in budget. This was an extraordinary event that happened in a very special film, why the reasons, but the complexity of that, what happened, nobody understand and nobody can judge lightly because it was an extreme thing. But what I'm saying is that, is basically, is mission, ambition, should never be compromised and probably, probably we get what we need and I will say never surrender to that. Never surrender to that. That's the only thing that I can say, you know. Thanks everyone.
