Speaker 1: My name is David Frost. I'm the Division Manager for the Kelowna Vernon Hospital Project, and I've been with Black & MacDonald since 2009. We're at the halfway point of a 30-year contract, and what we've really built on with the client is the fact that they can depend on what we say. We've built a level of trust with them that we have earned from the beginning. Over the years, we've been involved with many projects at both sites, the Cath Lab, for instance, where we took an old, existing area of the hospital and modernized it with a new catheterization lab, which had great impacts for patient care in the area.

Speaker 2: Hi, I'm Matt Hopkins. I'm Facility Manager here with Black & MacDonald at Kelowna General Hospital. I've been with this project and company for the last four years. We offer a comprehensive suite of services, so we're talking steam, water, medical gases, electricity, critical systems maintenance. We're working on boilers, chillers, generators, fire life safety, nurse call. We also do maintenance on hospital equipment, so surgical tables, booms, beds, exam lights, wheelchairs. We also provide project service, so we do renovations around the hospital, innovation projects in conjunction with Interior Health. We also provide landscaping and snow removal services for the site.

Speaker 3: Hi, I'm Spencer. I'm a Maintenance Electrician here at Kelowna General Hospital, and I've worked for Black & MacDonald for five years. A typical day would be come in, check the tracker for urgent work orders. That'll all be in good. I would carry on and do all my daily checks of electrical rooms, and then work through my tablet to find upcoming work orders of various electrical systems in the hospital here. I really enjoy working for Black & MacDonald. We've got a really good team here. When there's an urgent need for us to pull together and deal with an urgent situation, it's really good to see the team come together, and it makes you feel proud that we're working hard together. I'm really proud of the partnership we have here with the client. Recently, we had an issue with one of our generators. We managed to rectify the issue in a timely manner and ensure the system is there working correctly when needed.

Speaker 4: Hi, I'm Harry Rushton. I've been working here for 14 years at Kelowna General Hospital. I'm a plumber, gas fitter. A typical day for me here is I do my regular PMs where I walk around, check things, and then I prioritize by what's coming for work orders, whether they're emergencies or there's flooding or anything, I've got to be on the spot right away. We've had a constant problem where entire floors would be backing up with sewage because the piping wasn't done properly, and it would be way too expensive to fix it. So I created this diverter that went inside the pipe and made the sewage curve around, and ever since we've been installing these on every floor, it's never been backing up since. What I really like about work for Black McDonald's is the people, the way they always take care of whatever needs you have to get it done, and then just the environment is just a great place to work.

Speaker 5: My name is Chris. We are here in the Kelowna General Hospital bed shop. I've been working here for five years, and I basically repair all the beds, not only beds, but floor machines and basically anything else that comes into the shop. The whole role of the bed shop is to inspect, repair, diagnose any problems with beds or any other equipment that comes this way. It's pretty unique because we can do it in-house. We don't have to send it off to, say, Vancouver or Toronto or wherever else.

Speaker 1: Kelowna Hospital actually has a helipad that we use for rapid patient transport, which allows pickups along the highway, quick delivery without having to stop and unload in an ambulance and bring them into the hospital, which improves patient care.

Speaker 2: The client likes our commitment to a high level of service. They like how we consult on difficult problems and help with future planning. They also like our expertise as well as our commitment to the project on the site. Some of the things we're doing to lower our energy footprint here on site are energy modeling. We're doing tracking of utilities every month as well as forecasting for future years. We also look for opportunities to conserve energy, such as converting the lighting to LED, as well as installing electric charging stations in the parkades. We also work in conjunction with Interior Health's Energy Sustainability Committee.

Speaker 1: We are assisted with the construction of the 6th and 7th floors at the Polson Tower. Also, a new MRI was installed at the Vernon site, first ever for that location. It has greatly improved diagnosis and treatment for patients.

Speaker 6: I'm Evan Lucke. I'm the Facility Manager here at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, and I've been with Black MacDonald for 7 years. Black MacDonald has been working with Interior Health here at Vernon Jubilee Hospital for about 13 years, and the services that we provide are maintaining and operating the buildings on this campus. So, we're day-to-day operations, and that involves heating, ventilation, air conditionings. We look after the plumbing, the electrical, and importantly, the fire systems. And then, the other things that we look after is equipment, and that ranges anything from an ICU bed to patient lifts, and all the way down to small items like wheelchairs and even walkers. The reason we have so much success is due to our team. And so, the technicians we have, a lot of them have been here a long time. They're very skilled at what they do, and we have a lot of support people as well, making sure that all the requests that come in every day are handled in a timely fashion. We had a big elevator failure. A bearing went on it. It would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix that elevator, but our mail rates came up with a solution for a fraction of that. We have a new MRI suite, and currently we're working on a CT scan suite, which will be very beneficial to the hospital. And we've upgraded our chillers, and with the increased heat in the summertime, we're now able to keep our buildings cool. We've built this trust with Interior Health, and every day we go out and earn that trust.

Speaker 7: Hi, my name's Blake. I'm a journeyman plumber. I've been with Black MacDonald at Vern Jubilee Hospital for just about eight years now. What I like about my role here, working as a plumber at Vern Jubilee, it's just a variety of tasks that I may see through a day or a given week. Different challenges of fixing things. There's opportunities for training and advancement in our trades and careers. It's just a good place to come to work. One of the things that I'm currently working on is lifecycle upgrades for the building. So as the building ages, we monitor the components of the building and what needs to be replaced or upgraded. This helps to increase the reliability of the building and also help us to service

Speaker 8: the client by minimizing the downtime. I service equipment using preventive maintenances scheduled on a monthly basis, but also service anything that's become an issue. This can include anything from a cooler that services medication to a bone freezer, as well as air handling equipment. I think Vern Jubilee Hospital appreciates that Black MacDonald have a great understanding of the challenges of working inside of a hospital. With the continual partnership that we have with the hospital, we get an understanding of how they like to approach things and how we can accommodate their needs. We are working with our Black MacDonald projects department, as well as IH in accommodating a renovation for their kitchen. Some of their equipment is outdated and not very energy efficient. So we're looking to get something new for them that's going to service their space and also make things cheaper to run in the long term.

Speaker 1: Another component that's helped with the authority is the fact that we've taken on more of a consultative role with them. So we proactively look for solutions for them as issues arise, whether that be through opportunities to save the authority money with energy conservation measures or improvements in efficiency of building components. People may have heard of the recent wildfires that affected the Kelowna area. And these wildfires were so intense and so close to the hospital that we were actually getting smoke and ambers landing on the facility site. This clearly was an immediate safety issue and Black MacDonald, we jumped in action right away, completing regular walkarounds on the site, looking for key items that could potentially catch fire if came into contact with anything flammable, as well as doing rooftop patrols to make sure anything on there would not catch fire and cause any damage to the building. In addition to that, to maintain air quality, we were regularly changing filters in the air handlers. We're excited not only for the possibility of continuing on with the contract successfully, but also improving and expanding on it, assisting the authority as they need, possibly more consulting services or branching out into more projects, making things better for the community and the patient care in general.
