Speaker 1: I'm Travis Chalemi, I am the Strategic Communications Technology Manager for the Office of University Controller and I'm here to talk about our CU Innovation and Efficiency Award Submission. The official name for our submission is Content Rich and Engaging Learning Resources. Really what it was about was making our website, in particular our learning resources, easier to find and easier to use. Most of our content previously was structured like an archive. Everything was categorized, but the content was often buried. Learners had to wade through dozens and dozens of pages and links and accordions and click and click and click to get to the things that they were trying to learn about. What made matters worse is that our audience oftentimes was visiting us from a Google search or a website search and not landing on our carefully constructed archive. If there were any interactive elements, or maybe a video, it was typically on another page located somewhere else within our website. We did receive feedback from people letting us know that some of our learning resources were difficult to find. We also took a look at our Google Analytics and we could tell that people were clicking and clicking and clicking, looking for particular resources and sometimes not finding them. And so I think the inspiration was really just solving that problem, wanting to help people, wanting to make it an easier experience to learn how to do your jobs. Our new learning resources are context-rich and provide one-click access to a variety of formats related to the task at hand. Most of our new learning resources have a video component at the top of the page, giving users a general quick walkthrough of the process or task they need to perform. Below the video, we present an HTML version of the procedure. This is ideal for learners who understand the general process but are looking for a specific item within it. It's also a great option for those that aren't interested in watching the video or perhaps can't watch the video because of workplace constraints. When we talked to some of our learners, they told us that terminology is something that often gets in the way when learning a new process. To solve this problem, we added defined terms to our learning resources. So as a user hovers their cursor over a term they're unaware of, a definition pops up. The sidebar component of our new learning resource format provides a lot of great context. There's links to related videos, links to chat, to chat with our help desk. There are also links to test your knowledge components. They're like interactive games to test and assess whether or not you're understanding the learning resource materials. The bottom line is the new learning resource format puts everything that you need to know about a particular topic or task all in one place, with videos, pop-up defined terms, test your knowledge components, and it's still printer-friendly. We started the new learning resource format with the Elevate project. I'd say the best thing that's happened so far is the feedback from customers. It's great to know that people are visiting our learning resources and they're providing feedback telling us that this is great or this isn't so great. It allows us to really make sound decisions as far as what we're going to work on next, what we're going to improve, what video we're going to record, what animation we're going to make. So that's probably the best thing thus far. I think moving forward, we're using this new learning resource design to really serve as a model for how we do all of our web content. We really want to be in tune with the people who are visiting our websites, getting their feedback. We really want to make everything as context-rich as possible. One of the things I'm excited about for this particular submission is that campuses can benefit from this. Steal the model. We didn't invent this ourselves. We researched it and looked at what other people were doing and tested it against what we were doing. But feel free to copy this on your campuses, on your web content.
