Speaker 1: In this video, I'm going to show you how you can open and edit an SRT file. Hi, my name is David. And if this is your first time watching my video tutorials, and you're not yet subscribed to the channel, and you get any value from the content that you watch, kindly consider subscribing. Let's begin. What is an SRT file? An SRT file is a SubRib subtitle file, which is more or less a plain text subtitle file. And it's the most basic subtitle file that you'll ever find. And also, it is one of the most widely used subtitle files. Now let me show you an example of a subtitle file and what characterizes a subtitle file. So let's just double click on a subtitle file that I have as an example, double click on it. And this is what an SRT or SubRib subtitle file looks like. So you have a number, and then you have the time. And this is the start and the end of that particular caption block or the subtitle block, which is this particular part. And then there's a space before you begin the second number. That's what characterizes an SRT subtitle file. This is similar to a VTT file. And a VTT file is more or less an improved version of the SRT subtitle file. And I also have a sample. I'll just double click on this. It's a VTT file, and I can just pull it so that they're side by side for you to appreciate what I'm saying. Now, the only differences with this is that you'll notice there is no number. But with the web VTT or the web video text track subtitle, we have a title here. And then we're missing numbers. And then when you look at this between I think it's the microseconds or milliseconds, then it's a full stop on the side and a comma here in the SRT. So those are the few simple differences, but very achievable even if you're not going to be doing this manually, you can automate this process. Now, if you've noticed, my SRT file, this particular SRT file that we're concentrating on in this video, opened inside Notepad. So if you wanted to open an SRT file, you can open it using Notepad. And if your file doesn't give you like if you double click and it says it doesn't have an associated program to open, then you can just right click on it, click on properties. And then you need to change the default program that the particular subtitle file or the SRT file opens with. For example, you can click on change. And if I do that, you can change to IG sub, Camtasia, Notepad, subtitle edit, subtitle next, Notepad. But I always recommend you just do Notepad. Notepad can read or even Notepad, but Notepad is the best. If you're on a Mac, use the notes opening application on Mac. I think it's text edit, I don't know. So you can just click on apply and then click on OK. So that's the number one way you can do that. So if I have my file open, and if you wanted to edit your SRT file, for example, if I want to capitalize the Y, you just do that. And the T, you just do that. And then I think it also needs to be capitalized here, Y and a T. So if you're just doing a minor edit of just changing maybe a typographical error, then you can use Notepad to do that very, very easily. It doesn't take you a couple of minutes, just a few seconds. And once you're done, as always, you can save. You can decide to save or even if you wanted to do a new name, you can click on Save As. And always if you're using Notepad, ensure that you select the encoding to UTF minus 8. Ensure it's not any of these other formats because sometimes it might it might not be readable where it's going it's intended to go. So that's out of the way, you can edit and open SRT files using Notepad. The other option I recommend is if you wanted to do more than just do typographical corrections or just change some few errors, you can use an application like Subtitle Edit. So Subtitle Edit is free. And there's an online version and a version that is downloadable. So I already have mine downloaded and installed. So what we can do here is we can open the same file, just click on File, Open. And then navigate to the folder with your subtitle file, that is the SRT subtitle file, click on it. And you can see the type is an SRT file, just click on Open. And once you do that, it's going to populate in the list view, and also in the source view. So this is the source view. And you can also see some of the few characteristics about it. It's a SubRip, SRT, Unicode, UTF minus 8, frame rate of maybe that particular video. So that's a good thing. You may need now to do maybe corrections of synchronization and all that. So you need to add the video. Let's click on Video, Open Video. So you need to also have the video with you. Just click on Open. And once you click on Open, it's going to populate here with a waveform and you can already see that the subtitle text is here what is here. You may be see you may see some red things here, the duration, and you'll know that's potentially an error of character per second. So if you wanted to open and edit an SRT file, you can use subtitle edit which is easy, fast and free. So if you wanted to maybe adjust this particular section, you can just pull it up to there so that it begins right up at this section. So if that was an issue with synchronization, you can make any other change that you wanted to make. If you wanted to produce a different subtitle format, for example, export the SRT or convert the SRT to VTT, then you can come up to File, Save As. And then from the drop down here Save As Type, just type V. Here we go. It should be VW Web VTT. So just click on that. And since this file is available, just click on Save. And once you click on Save, what is going to happen is that this section is going to change into Web VTT, Unicode UTF minus eight, framerate 30. You can still change these to be the 23 that you had initially, so that it doesn't affect synchronization. And if you come back to the folder, you'll see a new VTT file that has been created. So that's an easy way. And if you look at the source view now of the Web VTT, you'll see the same thing that I mentioned. So that's just a quick video on how you can open and edit an SRT file, either using notepad or using subtitle edit. Thank you so much for watching this video.
