Speaker 1: My name is Navi Chauhan. I belong to a hospitality industry. So my question is, as in a hospitality industry, they need good leadership and time management and confidence. And I think I am good in all these things. But sometimes I am lacking in communication skills. So how can I be able to improve my communication skills?
Speaker 2: Great. Navi, right? From the hospitality industry. Thank you. Thank you. Sit down please. I'm sure a lot of other students will also have concerns about improving their communication skills. Two or three things. See, hospitality is a service industry, so communication becomes very, very important, right? Because you can solve guest issues, you can have so many issues which can be solved just by good communication, by proactive communication. So, but I'm sure even with students from engineering or business management, or regardless of what field you are from, or some of you might want to become politicians tomorrow, right? And then this is a very important skill. In fact, many studies have shown that other things being equal, all other things being equal, an individual's communication skills and their leadership skills which are correlated, can distinguish, it makes a difference as to what that person will be able to achieve in their life. The first thing I want to clear is that communication, good communication does not mean knowing the English language. A lot of people have this misconception that if I learn English, my communication will be fine. Sorry, English is a language, communication is an art. Two very different things. Even after learning English, your communication can be pathetic, when you need to speak, you speak, right? And even if you don't know any language, God forbid, let's say a person is born in the jungle and grew up there, he doesn't know any language, he only knows body language, right? Person A's body language will put two people in the jungle, person A's body language will be different from person B's, yes or no? Yes. You can try it right now. If you have to ask for a pen from her without using words, go ahead. Now, Navi, can you do the same? I want you to catch this. You have to. So, both of them are going to be different, right? And this can be misinterpreted. One of them, so if somebody really badly needs a pen, he'll be like, you know, he can, but variation hai ke nahi? That's what I'm asking. Yes? So, phir se is point pe wapas aata hu. Variation is an art that can be learned, that can be developed. English is a language that can be learned. Now, here's a problem most people, here's a mistake that most people make. They learn words from the dictionary and they try to insert it wherever it's possible. Aur khas karke agar doosron ka impress karna hai, toh aise heavy bhaari bharkam shoutdhoon laao. Right? Aur unko, doosre kuch nicha dikhane ke liye, bas word daalte jaao beech pe kaunso. Doosra bhi suchega hai, hai yeh kya word hai mere, iski communication, iski English word top ki. This is a misconception. Aap pehle kala develop karne par seekhen and I will suggest apne mother tongue mein pehle communication ki kala seekhen. Making eye contact, body language, voice tonality, being proactive, these sort of things. Inme English hona zaruri nahi hai. And side by side if you want to improve your English, keep a journal, keep a small notebook in which you're putting down difficult words. Train your brain on multiple fronts. Increase your reading. Are you reading at the moment? Are you writing at the moment? Do you write on a daily basis, not in the class, not notes? Do you write something? Right. So if you're not reading, if you're not writing, are you watching something? Are you watching other good communicators on YouTube or somewhere else? Are you? Yes? Are you listening to audios? So brain has so many ways to receive information. Use all of them. Right? Communication is an art, just like a muscle it can be developed. But I don't know who said this, but there's a famous quote which says, communication works for those, for those who work at it. Communication works for those, those who work at it. If you will work at communication, you will get better. If you will work to improve the art of conveying your ideas, is kala ko agar aap ispe kaam karte hain, hard work karte hain, main aapko ek law se introduce karna chahata hoon jo na sirf communication mein, but in life every field this law is applicable. It's called the law of paying the price. What's it called? The law of paying the price. I don't know, it's coming from Jack Canfield or Brian Tracy, one of those two gentlemen. The law of paying the price, which simply stated means this, if you want something, you must pay the price. Nothing is free. Agar aapko jeevan mein koi cheez chahiye, you want to wear a nice branded suit, you want to go to a nice holiday, you want to buy a nice camera, whatever, jo cheez, jitni uski quality achi chahiye hogi, utne paise dene zyada padhenge. Right? But life ki improvement mein paiso ki baat nahi, kuch log sochte hain paiso se main sab kuch achieve kar lunga, not gonna happen. Main Mumbai mein kuch din theh ra, toh wahan gym mein main bada interesting ek drishye dekha, ki shaam ko ek bada VIP ko person exercise karne ke liye aata tha. Khud thoda overweight tha, toh uske saath do bodyguard hua karte the, very well built bodyguard, 6 feet 2 inch, with a pistol and everything and full drama, one attendant uska towel pakarta tha, protein shake pakarta tha, ek attendant paani ki bottle pakarta tha, theke? But yeh sab kuch, naturally kisi ameet baap ka bade prabhavi, kisi influential baap ka beta hoga, but yeh saara kuch karne ke baad, push ups usse khudi lagane padte the. It doesn't matter how rich or influential your father is, you cannot pay someone else to do your push ups for you, right? So learn to do your own push ups, which means communication ko develop karne mein efforts lagenge, efforts ke bina mein koi aisi punji, koi aisi guide nahi hain, koi shortcut nahi hain, jisse aap usko achieve kar paye. It's gonna take efforts, it will take time, it will take hard work, but here's what you need, you need good role models. Aapko kis person ke tarah communicate karna, sikhna chahate hain, right? Listen to news reporters, journalists, people who are good, politicians who are good at the art of communication. Politician se yeh nahi matlab ki saare apni class mein speech baayi aur vaino se shuru kar do, right? Ya mitro se shuru kar do, right? This does not mean. Means that you see how a person is influencing the crowd. Us kala ko seekhe hain aap, ki koi vyakti crowd ko kaise influence kar raha hai. Aur main usko kaise use kar sakta hoon? Wo cheez pehle aati hain, shabd baad mein aate hain. In fact, I don't know, there's a Harvard study which says words are only 7% of the entire communication from one person to another. Body language is huge, visual is huge, auditory is huge, your body posture, your tone of your sound and so many things, they're all combining together. So agar aap mann mein yeh soch lein ki mujhe isk kala mein improve karna hai, kyonki isk kala ka mujhe bohot fayda hone wala. Beta aap dekhiye when you go into the work environment, you will have 100 different ideas. But if you cannot express them, what's the point? Koi aur person aayega, usko express karna aata hai, uske ideas sunne jaayenge, usko appreciate kiya jaayega, wo aage nikal jaayega. Phir aap bolenge, iska good luck acha tha. He's born lucky or something like that. No nonsense. He has developed a skill which you are slightly weak at and you can develop too. So is mental block ko remove karna hai. Nobody is born a good communicator. You gotta work at it. And you can. It's like a muscle, ko zitna istimaal karenge, utna improve ho jaayega. Raise your hand when you are feeling nervous. You're in a big auditorium, some guest speaker has come in. Naine kiya hai ye. Agar aapko uss samay, and the time comes, any questions? Aur ikdum jaise ho kahte hai na, shanti ho jati hai poore hall. Uss samay lag raha hai, mere mind mein hai bhi hai, puchun na puchun. Uss samay, raise your hand. The first time I raised my hand, my brain sat down. So my hand went up, my brain goes shut down mode. The question dada bhool gaya. But still dheet bano, agli baar virse raise your hand. By the time you do it three or four or five times, I think another gentleman had a question. When I'm talking to people who are in positions of authority, position of authority mein, toh main apne aaspaas se logon se communicate kar leta hu, but jab kisi senior person se yaar, kisi person of authority se communicate karna hai, tab mujhe mushkil aati hai. Toh iss mushkil ko over come karnega ek hi tariqa hai, talk to more people who are in positions of authority. The more you'll get comfortable, aapko bhi lagega ki yeh aise daant nahi maarte hain. The more you'll get comfortable, aapko bhi lagega ki yeh aise daant nahi maarte hain. The more you do it, the more comfortable you'll get. And that's the only way, there's no shortcut around it. The best way is to make yourself uncomfortable. Apne aapko un situations mein daalein, jaha aap uncomfortable ho rahe hain, and you will emerge victorious. But if you remain in your comfort zone, mujhe wohi karna hai, jo hamesha se karta aaya hu, toh kya milega? Na ji? Nothing nahi, kuch se milega. Main wohi karunga, jo hamesha se karta aaya hu, toh kya milega? Wohi milega, jo hamesha se milta hai. Pagalpan ki ek paribhasha yeh hai, hamesha se jo kiya hai, wohi karte jao, aur roh jaake shaam ko bhagwan se prasna karo, bhagwan meri kismat badlo dao. Aise nahi hota hai. Aaj aap, aaj soch lein ki mujhe apne halaat kaise badlne hain, in terms of improving my communication skills. Mujhe 6 mahine baad milen, with your efforts, let's see where the results are. Aur efforts ke bina kuch nahi hone waala. Thank you. Thank you for watching.
