Speaker 1: Hi, everyone. This webinar is part of our new series, Innovation with Tech During COVID-19, where we explore how our customers and partners have innovated to combat challenges posed by this current pandemic, whether that is building through new apps, forging new partnerships, or using technology in a new way. I'm Jonathan Hill, our current Community Engagement Lead here at Relativity, and I've been working here over the past few months, helping ignite and launch our Relativity Fellows Program. This is a program where we welcome motivated individuals from overlooked communities so that they can begin career fields in litigation support and e-discovery. Today I am so excited to moderate this conversation with Patrick Kellerman and Samuel Klage about Moray's partnership with the Stephen James Partnership. Samuel is the Founder and Chief Executive of the Stephen James Partnership, marketing leading professional supplier in the UK. Patrick is the Senior Director and Head of UK Managed Services at Moray, an award-winning provider of digital and legal business transformation in the legal industry. Patrick, Sam, thanks for joining me today. Thank you for having me, Jonathan. Awesome. Sam, starting us off here, what does SJP do, and how did you and Patrick actually get connected?
Speaker 2: Of course. The Stephen James Partnership, or SJP, is a market-leading supplier of legal services to law firms and also legal departments, and we, for the last 10 or so years, have been recruiting top-flight talent and legal professionals across paralegals, across lawyers, and also more recently across partner placements as well. All of our staff have studied law and worked within the legal profession, which we felt has given us a significant advantage over some of our competitors over the last 10 years or so. With regards to Moray, so Patrick and I met towards the back end of 2019, and we had a number of conversations, and the talk very quickly migrated to different possible opportunities in which we could work together in collaboration between SJP and Moray. And so here we are now, kind of almost fast-forward a year, and I'm delighted that we have an official partnership in place with Moray across e-discovery and litigation support. It's something that the values of Moray, the values of Patrick, and the rest of his leadership team were echoed by SJP, and we're delighted to be partnering with them, very excited about the rest of 2020 and looking into the future as well.
Speaker 1: I love that, and I think that, you know, you definitely take us to the next topic of the future, and even understanding how we got here in the future where this partnership is flourishing and starting to actually gain traction. Patrick, I'd love to hear from you to talk about what role did COVID-19 play in accelerating this partnership?
Speaker 3: Sure, thanks, Jonathan. So taking a quick step back, document review traditionally took place in review centers. Moray has a review center in the U.S., U.K., Switzerland, one in India, and SJP's model was primarily involving placing their top talent on-site with their clients, with their partners. COVID's social distancing mandate really meant that butts in chairs was a no-go. So come COVID, come this new normal that we're living in, that's when I got that call from Sam to follow up on some of our initial conversations about how do we collaborate? How do we pivot and take both of our businesses into the future during this new normal?
Speaker 1: I love that you framed it as a new normal, because I think even we as organizations are not only having to pivot, but our partners are pivoting as well. Sam, I would love for you to discuss the changing nature of reviews and how SJP had to rethink its business model.
Speaker 2: Of course. Following on from what Patrick was talking about, COVID-19 gave everyone, I think, lots of things to think about very, very quickly. For us, as Patrick rightly mentioned, we formally focused on placing people into organizations on-site. So, with COVID-19 and working with Moray, we were able to, in effect, have access to even greater pools of talent and, in a lot of cases, access to people that maybe previously, because of geographic restrictions or if they were, for example, too far outside of London to be able to come to London for a review, they might miss out on opportunities. So actually, the onset of COVID-19, from that perspective, has been fantastic in terms of widening access to people for particular review projects. And again, with a lot of the reviews that we've undertaken in the last six to 12 months or so, there's been a lot of demand for particular language skills, which again, has enabled us to not just increase our reach in the UK, but also potentially further afield as well. So, that, from our perspective, has been incredibly exciting and rewarding because over the first kind of probably six months or so of this year, there was a huge amount of uncertainty and unfortunately, that was seen across a lot of the jobs market, but actually, we've been delighted to be able to put forward opportunities to people that, in the past, may have been necessarily ruled out.
Speaker 1: You know, that actually resonates with me, Sam, especially when I think about our Relativity Fellows Program. When we launched the program in the midst of COVID, we had similar challenges, but when we think about, again, that talent is distributed equally and opportunity is not, that just means that we have to work 10 times harder to connect those talented folks to the opportunity, and I love to hear that SJP was thinking about this at the forefront. Now, Patrick, would you be able to actually walk me through the secure remote review capabilities you offer and how Relativity 1 played a role?
Speaker 3: There are three pillars, I'd say, really, in an effective document review. Security, there's engagement and metrics, and then there's the team. With respect to the first two, those are elements that we are hand-in-hand with Relativity. Let me walk through the solution and how those complement Relativity's value. Our secure remote review solution is a VMware Horizon 7 virtual desktop. We have great talent, yes, but we deploy what's known as a zero-trust principle. It doesn't mean we don't trust our team, we certainly do. It means that, technically, everything is entirely locked down. You can't copy-paste out of our environment, you can't save files down, you can't screenshot, we have complete access control as well. Now, layer all of those elements of security with what's offered in Rel 1. Of course, ISO SOC 2 certified data centers really can't be beat, complete permission control, and Rel 1's 2FA functionality could really be combined with our 2FA in the secure remote review environment. I don't know if 4FA is a thing, but security is key. That is a core principle of Relativity 1's. An engaged team is something that you really have to work towards. A good one is an engaged one, and that means they're asking questions, they're sharing insight, we're getting real-time answer and feedback to those. People have the metrics to understand where they're doing, where they may need a little bit of support, and how we're progressing. We were very worried we'd lose that as we transitioned from butts and chairs to a remote deployment. Relativity 1, I think, especially with the new Arrow UI, is really helping us to track and visualize progress. The app store really can't be beat in terms of what's available and immediately connectable with Rel 1. Of course, automated workflows and active learning as driving forward reviews contributes towards that goal of engagement. Bring us back to the team, a threshold question for review has always been, how close are you to a review center? How many seats does that review center have? To Sam's point about expanding the possibilities, secure remote review and our collaboration with SJP has really converted document review into a pure meritocracy. We're finding the best people regardless of location. It's also infinitely scalable. Numbers of seats available and location doesn't matter the way that it used to. Valuable professionals whose diversity of background and experience informing the valuable service that they provide to us, that's all that we're looking for right now. That's why we're so glad to be in this partnership with SJP.
Speaker 1: Wow, Patrick, I just want to point out to everyone, I did not prep you at all, but that was exactly the purpose of why we stood at Rel 1. When you think about the accessibility, when you think about being able to pull the data at ease to make data-driven decisions, and then lastly, like you said, when you think about the capabilities that are important in the review process, that is exactly the goal and exactly why we wanted to launch Arrow. I'm super excited and super happy to hear that it's performing well. I also now want to take a step back. I know that we're talking about relativity, but I'd love to actually dig more into your relationship, not only just on this call, but in prior meetings, I've gotten a chance to witness how special this relationship is between Murray and SJP. In addition to what we've discussed, Murray is actually a sponsor to SJP's program, Black Interns Matter. Sam, can you talk a little bit more about this program and share with us really the significance of this relationship?
Speaker 2: Of course, Jonathan, thank you. We are delighted as a company to partner with Murray in this truly special way with regards to our program, Black Interns Matter, which in summary is looking to place 1,000 black interns with law firms and legal departments by the end of 2021. We're doing things a little bit different because we think that there needs to be a huge shake-up and redress of the way that the representation of black people within the UK and in particular within legal services are accounted for. Unlike a number of other programs that are on the market or have been available, there's no entry requirements for Black Interns Matter. There's no need for someone to have achieved ABBA level or have a 2.1 from a certain type of university. This is about removing real barriers, barriers that people face on a daily basis and presenting people that may not have had the opportunity to shine, to give them a platform. We pay for everything. We pay as a minimum the London living wage for all of our interns. We provide a daily travel allowance, a daily food allowance, a technology allowance if applicable if, for example, people are working virtually. We also will provide full business attire to every single intern as part of the program so they can have a suit or business dress equivalent if they're working from home or remotely so that people can feel totally comfortable and also confident from day one in the office or due to COVID, whether that's virtually, and not feel that they have to go and borrow someone's suit or ask someone if they can borrow something to get ready for the internship. Because everything that we're looking to put as part of the Black Interns Matter program, it has come from a place of having conversations with people from the Black community for many years. For us, this isn't a knee-jerk reaction. This isn't something that we're doing as a result of the tragic death of George Floyd. This is something that has been happening for a huge amount of years, and actually for us, this is a privilege to be able to offer this scheme and program to people from the Black community because it's something that we believe is totally unique and something that we hope is going to take the legal world, and also after that, many other service lines and sectors by storm.
Speaker 1: That gave me chills, Sam. I love that, and I love the mission, and I hope that Relativity is able to even be a part of it in the future. I'd also like to now take an opportunity to think about what the future looks like, because as you just stated, we know that this cannot just be something that we talk about right now, but we have to take action on moving forward and make it sustainable. I'm actually going to come to you, Patrick. I'd love to hear what does the future look like for your partnership with SJP, and especially thinking about the virtual review process?
Speaker 3: I think a partnership has to be that the sum is greater than the parts, that we rely on each other's strengths. You will not find anyone more passionate, more thoughtful, and more effective than Sam in meaningfully actioning everything that he is through the Black Interns Matter Program. Sam has been thinking about this and working towards making important changes for some time. I'll be quite candid, though. It was, in fact, the death of George Floyd and the conversation that that sparked that caused Moray as an organization to relaunch our diversity and inclusion initiative. We have the senior-most executive mandate to be proactively inclusive, to be anti-racist, and there's been a uniform expression of an uninterest in checking boxes. So Sam, SJP, Black Interns Matter, the program affords Moray that opportunity to contribute towards a solution. We're doing so by offering business training to participants of the program, mentorship, advisory and marketing support, so that's going to be a hallmark of the SJP-Moray relationship going forward. On the secure remote review side, really, I think the world's our oyster. I think that secure remote review is here to stay. I don't think it's a moment in time, and that's because we're seeing results. We're seeing Sam's top talent performing in the environment on par or better than what we experienced in the traditional delivery mechanism of document review. So we're here, we're causing waves in both spaces, and I'm excited to be going along for the ride with Sam and with SJP's support.
Speaker 1: I love that, and I love how authentic this response is. I think that oftentimes people look for the copy and paste, but like you said, we have to relaunch, we have to look at ourselves and understand what are the right steps for us to take. And I think that this made sense for Moray, and I love to hear that you're all continuing to take these strides forward. And Sam, closing us out here, what does the future look like for your partnership with Moray? How do you build from here?
Speaker 2: Sure. Well, I think in the immediate term, Moray's response and Moray's support with the Black Interns Matter program really illustrates the point, because that was something that we hadn't discussed with Moray until fairly recently. So we launched the partnership with regards to the e-discovery and the review side of things. But I think as you've seen from the partnership across Black Interns Matter, Moray are totally aligned and bought into the vision that we have as a company, and I believe we share their vision, their values, and also their culture set. So for us, this is kind of the start of the journey and something that I'm very excited to see where it develops to, because remote review, for sure, we're going to see continually increased appetite from clients across both SJP and Moray, and because we've been operating in effectively the same space for a number of years, we're now very much able to combine forces and combine kind of our unique model and methodology to the resourcing, sourcing and recruitment side of things with Moray's market-leading expertise, infrastructure and delivery across e-discovery and remote review. So I'm incredibly excited, and I think if the response and the willingness to help from Moray to SJP with regards to the Black Interns Matter program is anything to go by, then I think 2021 is probably going to be our busiest year ever working together, which I'm delighted that we'll be going into shoulder by shoulder.
Speaker 1: That's exciting. Let me just thank you both, Sam and Patrick, for taking the time to connect today and chat with me about your partnership. I love hearing about how it got started, what you all are up to, but most importantly, where this is going. Relativity is so proud to be part of this and to be able to highlight and elevate this conversation, because we believe that this is the model to what a difference is going to be made in 2021. Thank you all so much for not only committing, but doing the work needed, and we look forward to continuing this partnership with you both.
Speaker 2: Not at all. Thank you for having me, Jonathan.
