Speaker 1: Are you looking for a user-friendly and open-source software to caption your videos and make subtitles in multiple languages? Then I promise you won't regret watching this very easy and complete tutorial on subtitle edit. So stick around and learn how to make subtitles in a few minutes. Hello, welcome or welcome back. So let's begin. So once you've downloaded the software, this is the layout you should be looking at. First of all, if English isn't your native language and you would like to switch to another language, you could head to options, choose language and change it. As you can see, there are so many languages you can choose from. I'm just going to stick to English so that it's easier for everyone to follow along. Then let's click on options, settings. What you want to do is set things like the maximum length for each subtitles, the minimum and maximum duration of the subtitles, the number of lines and the gap between subtitles. If you're working for an audiovisual agency, they will likely give you specific guidelines, so make sure to follow those. Otherwise, if you're just starting out and you're not aware of the general subtitling guidelines, you can have a look at what Netflix and other platforms say about that. These are my settings. So it's two lines per subtitle with an average of 45 characters per line and a maximum duration of five to six seconds. Now if you head to subtitle formats, you will see over here that subtitle edit supports so many subtitling formats, which is amazing. However, I leave the SRT as default format because it's the most common one and the one I use most of the time. Now you can have fun and scroll through the other settings, such as creating shortcuts, change the waveform colors or set an error color, which means the software will highlight the subtitles that are too short or too long so you can change it. Now if you head to video player and it's the very first time you're using subtitle edit, they might ask you to download the MPV video player, which as you can see, handles the preview text, or you can also select the VLC media player. Over here on the toolbar, you can set which buttons you'd like the software to show you while over here on appearance, you can change the font and the size in case you don't like the default one. Plus another very cool feature is the variety of layouts that the software provides over here, but I'm just going to stick to the first one. As for any subtitling software, you can either create a new project if you have to make subtitles from scratch or work on a file someone provided you. So head over to file and choose the option you prefer. Let's say you need to create subtitles from scratch and synchronize them to the video. You can open a video here and you will immediately see that the video and the sound waves will appear on the right side of the software. Now if you don't like this layout, you can drag the lines to make the video smaller or bigger, like so. The size of the sound waves looks pretty good to me, but if you want to make them smaller or bigger, you can either zoom in or out over here, or you can also hold the control key and scroll back and forth with your mouse wheel. To start adding subtitles, you can right click here and insert a line and then manually set the start time and the duration of the subtitles over here. But to be honest, I find it time consuming and this is why I opt for the second solution, which is to drag over a portion of the sound waves, like so. Then right click and add the text. As you can see, the software will automatically set the duration of the subtitle. Then once you selected the portion of the sound waves, you can start typing the text while making sure you respect the rules we already talked about. Over here on the bottom left of the screen, you will see these buttons, which are translate, create and adjust. Now if you're transcribing, you can go to create and you will have these useful buttons such as insert new subtitle or play from just before the text. Now let's add a few more subtitles real quick. Now let's say I want to translate the subtitles I made in another language. Subtitle edit, as opposed to other softwares, also has the option to auto translate them as you can see up here. Let's say I want to translate from English to Italian. Let's hit translate and bam, in two seconds you have an automatic translation of the English subtitles. Well guys, of course nothing compares to a human translation as I always say, so of course this needs to be corrected manually. Now you'll see both languages side by side and you can go through it and make all the changes. There are definitely some mistakes I can already see in Italian, but this option is still time saving, especially if you're translating long videos. Once you're done, you can save both files on your computer. I will also show you how to open a file you've already created, but it's very simple. Now let's go back to the original layout, add the video as you did before, so over here. And then click on file, open and pick your subtitles. I will tell you one last thing which is super handy. If you try and right click on one of the subtitles of the list, you will have a few more options such as insert before and after, merge with the line before or after, bold, italic and so on.
