Speaker 1: Hello, welcome back to Podcasts Like a Pro. Today we're going to be talking all about writing great looking show notes for your podcast episodes. So the show notes are the resource, the best resource to get your podcast listeners from their iPhone and walking the dog or doing the dishes or on the train to your website to engage with you and your brand and continue that discussion that you started with the podcast on your turf. You know, iTunes and podcasting is a wonderful world because it allows us to reach so many people in a unique way, but the fact is it's a very much a one-way discussion. You are podcasting, they are listening, and your show notes is the first and maybe the best chance you have of continuing that discussion in a two-way manner and getting people on your turf where they can sign up for your email list or join your Facebook group or just engage with other content that you have and using your podcast as kind of the tip of the iceberg and the way to expose people to your brand and your message and then get them in an area where they can find out more about you and the things you have to offer. So what's the goal of podcast show notes? We covered this a little bit, but it should be an additional resource that you mention on the podcast where people can go after the episode to find out more about what you mentioned. Something it does that's really great is that it improves the overall SEO kind of footprint and impact of your podcast episodes. So you're putting your podcast out there in iTunes, but we talked about search engines in the SEO module. If you're not creating show notes for your podcast on your website, then you're missing a huge opportunity to rank in Google, which is the biggest search engine in the world. So your show notes are a great opportunity to create a piece of content from your podcast episode that will increase your rankings in Google since you already have your podcast covered ranking in iTunes. It'll give your listeners a great chance and reason to go to your website, again, be on your turf, sign up for your email list, follow you on social media, check out other content you have and other types of content you have. Maybe you have a YouTube channel or a blog that they want to read more about, and you can provide additional value to listeners after the episode and engage with you between episodes. Again, most people, you're going to be podcasting once a week or something like that. What if your people want to join your Facebook group and start talking to you about growing tulips every day? You're not going to create a podcast episode every day, so you're going to give people a chance to find out more about you, engage with you and your brand and your message and your community in between those episodes. This is kind of the bridge between podcasting being the tip of the iceberg of finding out about you and your brand and your message, and all of the other stuff that you'll be creating to follow up with your audience after the podcast episode. One thing that you should really think about is making your podcast show notes shareable. At Podcast Motor, we use a WordPress plugin called Click to Tweet, and we put nifty and creative little quotes in here that people can just click on this button. This is embedded within our show notes, and they click on this and it tweets it out to social media. Additionally, a great opportunity here is to have buttons on the posts to share on things like Facebook and Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, right from the post itself. Let's take a look at an example of what I think is a good set of show notes. This is from On The Media, and what they're doing here is they have a bit of a description here at the top about what the show is all about, who the guest is, and then they have a bunch of links for things that they've done and these films that they've been in. At the bottom, they're linking to areas where you can find out more about the host and the guest. Follow them on social media, that's a strong call to action, or sign up for their newsletter. I think these are all things that are pretty universal, things that people can do regardless of your industry, your niche, or what you're podcasting about. The goals should be pretty similar, right? You should have people sign up for your email list so you can get in touch with them and let them know about new things that you're up to and that you might want to share with them, and follow on social media so that you can continue that discussion in a one-to-many way so you can post on social media and have a bunch of people follow you and engage with you and your brand. This is, I think, a good example of what show notes should look like. It should have links and resources in it because that improves SEO all around. It should have a call to action to subscribe to a newsletter or an email newsletter. Follow people on whatever social media channel is best for you and your brand. It's going to be different for everybody. For some people, it's Twitter. For some people, it's Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram. Then at the top, it should be a bit of a hook. It should be, hey, today we're going to talk about this, and you should listen because of that. It should be something that is a little enticing to potential visitors because the fact is some people are going to find your show just from your show notes, not from iTunes, and you want to be able to give them a really interesting and engaging reason that they should click the play button and find out more about your podcast. That's a wrap up on podcast show notes and what writing great looking show notes look like. We'll have a couple more examples of what we think are really good looking show notes in the area below this video. I hope you enjoy.
