Speaker 1: Hi, I'm Allie Katz, founder of New Law Business Model and personal family lawyer, and I'm here with you today because as lawyers, we have a huge opportunity to impact culture and the lives of the people in our communities. I cannot imagine doing anything more important or meaningful with my life, and I hope that you'll join me. Over 20 years ago, after graduating first in my class from Georgetown Law, and while working at Munger, Tolles & Olson on corporate and tax transactions for Warren Buffett, I quickly came to feel that something was irreparably wrong with the traditional way of practicing law. This was a pretty devastating realization for me. I had spent over a hundred thousand dollars on my law degree, I had significant student loan debt, and I felt trapped by my choices. Plus, I was a new mom and the breadwinner in my family with my husband staying at home to take care of our daughter. Commuting an hour each way in LA traffic just to save the uber wealthy money on their taxes was not why I went to law school. And worse, I began to discover major holes in the estate planning process for the regular people I was serving with the foundational estate planning that I got to do for the law firm partners and the parents in my community. The holes I was discovering in the estate planning process were shocking to me at the time, but now it all makes sense. The traditional law practice model is broken, and it has been for a very long time. Now most of us know it, but back then I was disillusioned, defeated, and frankly terrified. Because I had put so much time, energy, and money into law school and passing the bar, and I was counting on practicing law for the rest of my life and making a great living while I did it. Yet at just barely 30 years old, I could not imagine living like that for the next 20 to 40 years. Especially because I felt that the work I was doing wasn't even helping anyone. So after just three years in big law, I set out to start my own law practice, and I built something I could believe in. I quickly realized my time in law school or at MTO had not prepared me for any of it. Everywhere I looked, I found lawyers who were experiencing the same things I was. But nobody had a solution other than just work more, work harder, or just keep churning out template documents at higher and higher volume and charge more money. But that couldn't be the answer. The documents we were churning out were already failing the families we were serving. My own father-in-law had spent $3,000 on an estate plan with a prestigious firm in Florida, only for us to get stuck in the probate court and dealing with his ex-wife after he died, which was the exact reason he had spent the $3,000, so that we would stay out of the probate court and from dealing with his ex-wife. And if the most prestigious firm in Florida and Charlie Munger's firm were both churning out documents that were failing their clients, I knew something needed to change. I knew we needed systemic solutions, not just better documents or more efficiency so we could serve more clients. I began to think that we needed a complete revolution of the way we were taught to serve clients and run our law practices. And after looking everywhere for it, and even considering leaving the law altogether, I finally accepted I would have to create it myself. When I shared my hopes, dreams, and visions with other lawyers in those early days, they laughed. They told me I'd never be able to do it. Gratefully, I didn't listen. Instead, through a lot of trial and error and a ton of effort, I built a million-dollar practice serving clients I loved, doing work I believed in. I invented a whole new way of serving clients, became the go-to lawyer for families in my community, wrote a best-selling book on legal planning for families, and began appearing on television as a family financial and legal expert on shows like Good Morning America and The Today Show. And if you look at most of the million-dollar business law practice owners in the field of estate planning today, you'll see that at some point they were trained by me. In the process, I realized I had a revolution on my hands. But it would take a lot more than just me to change the legal profession in the way that I saw was needed. It would take thousands of lawyers all serving clients to the same standard of care with processes and systems and technology to support them so these lawyers could educate their communities and serve their clients without having to reinvent the wheel. Now, before I could invest any more time and energy in educating people about what to look for in a lawyer or how to get their estate planning done right or build businesses that could truly thrive, I would need to train a lot more lawyers and build the systems that these lawyers would need to serve the families and business owners in their community who would demand the support that we had never been taught to provide. So I started a new law business model to train an army of lawyers and to give you what no one had been able to give me, a new way to serve clients with a high-value, heart-centered service and all of the processes and systems to deliver on that service and turn your clients into literal raving fans who cannot help but tell everyone they know about you. Today, in a race to the bottom world of online, DIY, and cheap legal, that new law business model that I created for myself is even more important to you being able to have a life and law practice you love. Here at New Law Business Model, we give you the antidote to the systemic illnesses of a legal system that is failing you and your clients. That antidote is a legal service that cannot be replaced by technology that gets you paid for the most important parts of your role as an educator and counselor and that you get to build a thriving business around to serve your community in a truly meaningful way. The service is life and legacy planning for families and business owners and we teach it to you as part of our Personal Family Lawyer program. The Personal Family Lawyer promise and the systems and processes it's based on are the linchpin for you to build your law practice into a law business you, your family, and your community can count on. And our community of Personal Family Lawyer firms are the go-to resource to support families and businesses with their most important legal and financial decisions. My life's work has been dedicated to redefining two things. One, what families and business owners should expect from their legal and financial professionals and two, how you can meaningfully impact the families and business owners that you serve with a service that you and they love. So if you are a lawyer we would love to have you join us by booking a call with one of our law business advisors and for everyone else if you're not a lawyer find a Personal Family Lawyer in your community at personalfamilylawyer.com and get started on your own life and legacy plan today.
